Advice please on an injury non GSD (7 replies)

We have an 8 yo female Border Terrier and she just tore a toenail out. We can't stop the bleeding. Our Vet is closed and the closest emergency clinic is almost an hour away. Does anyone have any advice on how to stop the bleeding? It's not gushing, but is bleeding pretty bad. Help please. |

If you don't have alum or a styptic pencil, you can use flour or corn starch to help stop bleeding. Pack a small amount in the cut nail end and apply pressure. Holding ice on the cut surface (if the dog will allow) will also help stop bleeding. |

See if you can get a styptic pencil from the drug store. Men use them to stop the bleeding if they get clumsy while shaving.
Otherwise, I'd just cover it with a gauze pad, and leave it. It will stop eventually, but if you keep poking at it, you'll delay the clotting. Unfortunately, it's not an area you can put pressure on, which is the usual way of stopping bleeding. |

Wrap the entire paw w/gauze and vet wrap/cling tightly to hold pressure. Is the nail completely gone?? Or just broken? If still there the vet may need to pull it out. Needs to be rebanadaged daily....cleaned and started on antiboitics. Very painful...ouch..wish you luck! |

Flour, regular white flour. Take a cup of it and stick the whole foot in it.

The nail is completely gone. I have alum but it's not working. We got lots of gauze and wrapped it well and I crated her in here with me to keep her from chewing it off. If we can keep the bleeding under control I'd rather take her to our vet in the morning. Thanks for the advice. |

Naya's broken her nail in half twice so far, and what I did was this, first, I disinfected it, put triple antibiotic ointment on it, gause wrapped it, and kept her quiet and changed her bandages twice daily for about a week...Being a high drive workingline dog, it drove her nuts, but it healed.
A suggestion, let it air out for a few minutes between changing the bandages...

We poured peroxide on it before we wrapped it, I'll put some ointment on it before we go to bed and we'll change the bandage. Tough little dogs they are, she didn't even flinch. She's being a very good patient, laying quietly and sucking up all of the attention. Drake is very concerned and was laying by the crate until we let the puppy in, now they're off playing and she's alone and calm. It's not bleeding through the bandage so I think she'll be fine as long as we keep her quiet. Thanks so much, I appreciate the advice. |
