I've been exercising one of my bitches seperately, she is 4 years of age.  She had been exhibiting too much dominant behaviour when I was walking her with the pack off leash, A lot of running to get beside several other females she wishes to dominate and jumping over their neck, shoulder area and biting, using her body forcefully, etc.  making them submit to her.

So she has been walked last and she has been "marking" probably a dozen times on our hike.  She must be smelling the trail of the other dogs who had been walked within the last hour or two.

Anybody notice this behaviour with other females and is this dominant marking just as with males who share the same turf?

Oh, yeah....I think bitches are worse than males about that.  My Rottie bitch is so funny about marking.

Yes, all of my dogs do the neck bite/shoulder slam to eachother. My 8 week old pup flew through the kennel gate gap and slammed both of my adult dogs the first day she was here. My female marks over my male and my male is still too younge to care about marking though he does smell where other dogs have gone.

Absolutely. One of my females will stand next to the other female and my male while they are going and will mark on top of both urine and feces.

I have one female that will lift her leg in any place the other dogs have peed/pooped.  Another of my girls will mark when she's in heat - not lift her leg, but will pee in multiple places.  My youngest girl scratches her feet on the ground and marks/digs after she uses the bathroom.  It's not an uncommon thing for dominant girls.

That is a very common behaviour, especially for the dominant bitch of the household. I have a very dominant Fero grandaugther who hikes a leg at every opportunity, as well as a daughter of hers that does the same thing. I do think that part of this is an acquired behaviour, as I have noticed another young bitch beginning to do the same thing.

Best Regards,

Bob-O

Ha ha, my dominant female of the place does that, too-I thought it was SO peculiar at first-seeing a FEMALE hike a leg to pee! I notice more of such behaviors when someone is coming into heat, too. Gets things kinda stirred when such occurs. But yeah, it's perfectly normal, howbeit funny to see.

I have two dominant bitches who mark the territory and lift their legs to pee.

I have an alpha bitch that does this too and my alpha male follows her around and always pees over hers to show her who is boss.  Bitches that do this seem to be rock solid temperamentally and often are very tough alphas in my experience.

As someone else mentioned, she will be coming in to heat soon and this increases the marking behaviour I understand.

This bitch IS one confident , rock solid temperament  as Preston mentioned and tough, oh yeah!  She has that quiet, unwavering confidence that so appealed to me when I first purchased her 1 1/2 yrs ago.  She came into an existing pack of females well established from being born and raised with us.  She showed absolutely no fear NOR aggression, fit right in smoothly.

My oldest Alpha female (unquestioned by the pack) is aging and experiencing some health issues.  Perhaps she has picked up on this and is moving herself into leader of the pack position.  She has produced 2 excellent litters for us and we have been very pleased with her.

Absolutely. Every GSD bitch I've had has marked. One even lifted her leg to overmark male scent. She was a very alpha girl.

In my experience the alpha bitches which are the most courageous protectors and will never back down from any threat are those which are very calm and calculating.  They typically will tilt their head and process things for a split second and then make an judgement and decision to act appropriately.  These bitches are extremely smart, tough as nails, super calm and what I call "cognitive processors".  They take everything in, process it and then react appropriately.  These bitches are rare and make great 24/7 house dogs and brood bitches. Crooked Creek Ranch, enjoy what you've got because they are hard to get and most excellent.
