Itchy Ears (6 replies)

One of my girls, a two year old, has recently started having trouble with one of her ears. When I let her out of her crate, she runs around with her head cocked and holds the ear kind of funny, kinda like a dog will do when it gets water in her ear. She also sometimes shakes her head, or sits down and scratches it like crazy. Could it be mites? Or something else? Is there anything I can get for her or should I take her to the vet? |

Sounds like she could have an infected ear. She might have picked up a grass seed or something similar.
When you look in her ears are they dirty, smelly? Are they warm to the touch?
It certainly sounds like somthing is wrong and if you are unsure it could be well worth a trip to the vets. One of my girls regularly had to have ear drops to clean and clear infection. You can get some very good drops at pet shops - I use Otodex Ear Drops and I find them very effective. |

No, they don't seem dirty or smelly at all. I've had dogs with ear infections before and they were very smelly and had black gunk inside. |

If they aren't dirty my guess would be she has something in there, like a grass seed or tiny bug crawled in....One thing you could try is some peroxide. Put it in a suringe and slowly put it in her ear, massage a little then let her shake her head. It might shake it loose. If not I would take her in to the vet to get a look see, because to much scratching and head shaking and she could end up with a hematoma, those are a pita... |

rotties ears are down so they are always a mess. I started using "swimmers ear" over the counter. Has worked great for maintance. |

Yeah, I had a rottie who had itchy ears. He would whine and scratch them sometimes, and was always shaking his head. I had to keep him on drops most all the time, but they worked well. I will try some with her and see what happens. Thanks! |

after you get out whatever is in there,,,,with a warm solution of dish liquid, plain kind like dawn, peroxide and 1/3 white vinegar...you can wipe out the ear with a long wound up papertowel with some white vinegar on it....do this for a week and keep the ear dry....
I use a small old bottle of ear drops that is empty and put 1/3, of each ingredient....put bottle in a pan of boiling water for a sec....do not microwave....it destroys anything good in med or food.....
Even water from a microwave is not of any value to human consumption. |
