Does any one know about american laekenois breeders. Just checking them out and haven't seen any in the US.

Or maybe even anyone who knows a bit about them. I would post on their board but there is no activity on that one.

I dont know much about them other then they are the rarest of the Belgian shepherd varieties.

They certainly are interesting dogs to look at. Does anyone know how they work?

I have always been curious about them, but never took the time to look into them.

My guess is that they work like a mali because alot of the belgian sheepdogs are inter-bred and named by coat and color. So they may have been 2 or 3 varieties in a litter. I really like their look.

There is one here in CT which competes in NADAC Agility. I believe they are not recognized by AKC so there are not any here. I believe about 5 years ago I was told she was the only one here but that was the word of a Belgian Tervuren Breeder and nothing official. I believe AKC only recognized the Terv, Sheepdog, and Mal but I could be wrong. She appears to be a dream dog. She is not over done like some Mal's but not quite as calm as a Terv.

Where did you read it ? I guess there has to be a reason they are so rare.

When i did my BH, there was a Lakenois, from a Minnesota club getting her BH as well.  Our club was affiliated with UScA.  I just went to USA's website and checked the Minnesota clubs, but could not find it.....  If I come across the lady with her dog, I will post here for you....

Hi..

Haven't been on this board often, so I apoligize for the late reply.   I have owned 2 Laekenois so far, my 2 year old male had didn't pass his OFA so he was retired from Schutzhund training, and I am currently playing around with a 6 month old male.

Both dogs I got from Winjammer Belgians in Michigan. http://winjammer.brinkster.net/index.htm

Someone mentioned Nerves and yes weak nerves are a problem but not in just this variety, but in ALL BELGIANS.  Malinois included, titles don't mean a dog has a stable temperament either!    The Laekens are very rare and very few are worked even in Europe.

They don't tend to have the high prey drive of the Malinois so they aren't as sporty, they are more defensive and less focused on equipment then the mals. They are harder to work because of that.  My first male was "sharp" when young and that turned into to a nice serious attitude as he matured. He has good nerves, bite hard and I had high hopes for him.

Jury is still out on my pup. His nerve is ok right now, prey drive is lower then I am used to in my Mals(I have owned Malinois and GSDs for over 10 years).  I have a GSD bitch who is a month younger and she is so far much, much nicer IMO

In all fairness though it is hard to compare a working bred GSD with a show bred Belgian.

I'd love to breed a nice Laeken to a kick ass Malinois to maybe improve a bit on the working ability in the wire coats, this is ok to do in Canada where are coat types are just varieties of the same breed.  I think the Laekenois has some well needed seriousness, which most malinois I see are lacking nowadays.

Maybe because I am involved in GSDs I look at things differently?

Feel free to ask any questions.

Here is another Laekenois site, with links to kennels:

http://www.laekenzine.com/

Wasn't a Laeken featured in Susan Barwig's Schutzhund book?

Thanks for the info. From what I have seen I don't think they can compare to a German Shepherd.
