I have a Ram 350 which sits high off the ground. When Vandal jumps out of it I half lift his front end so he doesn't get the impact on his legs. He's young and I worry about him injuring himself. I found a flat step stool that I would like to train him to slowly step onto to exit the truck. Does anyone have input on how to do this so that he doesn't try to jump past the stool to get down? I'm assuming it would be good to do up and over whith the stool on flat ground to begin with. He's a year old so is long enough to make the stretch between the truck and the stool, btw.

I'd appreciate any input.

Mine tend to want to jump down my steps to the house, they took a tumble last winter four of them and my pup was injured.

I started working with the pup first and stopping him on a line at different stage's of going down, it seemed to work but they still follow old habits and tear ass down the steps. I guess my point is the dog may want to keep jumping.

I would say make the stool high at first closer to the truck like a baby step before the jump, then go down in size to more of a reach. But honestly I dont think this jump will hurt your dog in the first place. Unless your talking monster truck here how high of a jump is it?

Get a ramp or make a ramp. Why chance injuring the dog jumping up and down to a high vehicle?

Ditto to what Hodie said, you can find some nice ones for about $100 on ebay that telescope to about 4' , I'd have to go measure to be sure on that, but its well made. I have a RAM 3500 also and they are pretty high off the ground, hard on joints. Once in awhile would probably be alright but daily.......

I realize it's hard on the joints. That's why I have been lifting him out. And why I got the step which is the perfect height if I can train him to use it. Until I get him trained to use it I will continue to lift him out. My question was how to train for the step because some of the terrain I train in doesn't facilitate the length of a ramp but I could put a step closer to the truck.

How do you teach Sch dogs to walk down the A frame instead of jumping from the top?
