Depends on the size of your 11 month old GSD. I would say it is too small if the dog is over 55 pounds.

would 42inch would fit then....
i think 48inch extra large might be harder to fit in my car even when folded.

I bought the larger 48" this year, it will fit the back of my Cherokee, can't say about other vehicles . It is the steel folding type. My largest male dog is comfortable in it and sleeps there when a bitch is in heat. 42" would probably do for you, I don't know for sure what you need. |

I have a 36 inch and a 42 inch in the car for my male and female. In my other vehicle though my male was in a 36 inch and actually was pretty comfy in there. Only way I could fit two crates in the car.

For use in the home I have a very large crate, but the only crate that would fit in my car is a 36. My Male lies comfortably in it and I feel that it is fine for a couple of hours for training and the commute. I wouldnt feel good about using it in the home for or when he has to be in there for an extended time, but it works fine for me for short term use while training and driving. |

In my van I use the 36" as I can fit two. I don't use them for extended times but a couple hours seems okay. At home the crates are 42" and 48". |

I would add that mine seemed more comfortable in the smaller size when traveling, less sliding around. |

36inch open wouldn't fit in my car but i can use this as folding while driving and she sits in the back and crate i just open and laid outside the grass in the shady area.
if 36inch wouldn't be problem and seems many using it i'll get that one...
i've 48inch at home that she uses as daily purpose.

A 36" is PLENTY big!! My crates in the car are 24x36 and both dogs can stretch out, and sit up, they are a bit slouched, well Jager is but they have MORE than enough room! Most custom crates for cars are smaller, look at the crates built for Ford Explorer and those are only 21" wide. Both of my dogs tend to jump into the same crate for some crazy reason, they both fit in there, it's tight but they manage to get in there!!!
I think the width is very important as well as the lenght, but I know a lot of people who also travel with their dogs in 400 crates, and that works fine as well.
You should be just fine with the 36" so long as it's not only 18" wide! Jager is about 84 pounds and he has plenty of room to grow in there still!!!
You should really consider putting her in a harness while you are driving if you are not, a minor accident can send her through the windshield, bad bad news! We have a lady at our club with a little Eclipse, I keep telling her she needs to get a dog car, her dog barely fits in there anymore! There is a lady at the Monterey Bay club who drives a BMW Z4 and she had the passenger seat removed so her dog can ride along with her (she does seatbelt him in) so whatever works for ya!

"I think the width is very important as well as the lenght, but I know a lot of people who also travel with their dogs in 400 crates, and that works fine as well." ?????????????
You just stated you use crates that are 24 x 36. A 400 series crate is 36 long by 24 wide and 26 high. |

I have the SUV crates in the car now, and they are 21 inches wide. My male gained a 10 inches in head room and 6 inches in length from the 36 inch one. Even with 21 inches wide he can turn around no problem, and he's a pretty long fellow. |

Hmm the 400 plastic crates sure seem much smaller than the crates that I have, matter of fact I know they are smaller because I can fit two 400 crates side by side in my Element, and these crates can not fit side by side, maybe they are wider than 24"?

Jut checked, these are 24x36x27 so the 400's that I have used in the past, the plastic ones must be smaller somehow, bc they fit side by side and these do not at all
One opens sideways and Jager gets in from the back of the car, and the other opens from the short side and I let Sasha in from the passenger door. |
