TWO DAY SHOW (102 replies)

I really hope GSD of Scotland RECONSIDER their decision not to let unauthorised photography and video, Most people now take digital cameras to shows for their own personal use, what happens to those.
This is our major show of the year, exhibitors should be first and foremost.
The UK show scene is in enough mess without causing more problems. |
|
|
|
|
Another big nail in our GSD Show scene, I am aware of more people giving up, who can blame them. With huge increases in fuel costs already, and signs this will continue to escalate, we do not need GSD Club committees or the Kennel Club or the GSD Breed Council doing anything detrimental to our very vulnerable Show scene. Especially if they cannot or will not do anything to HELP IT! |

Those of you who have received your schedules for the 2 day show may have noticed the slip of paper inside re cameras and video cameras it reads
"IT IS THE POLICY OF THE HOSTING CLUB OF THE 2-DAY NATIONAL 2008 THAT NO FILMING OR PHOTOGRAPHY OF ANY KIND IS TO TAKE PLACE WITHIN THE PRECINCTS OF THE SHOWGROUND WITHOUT PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OR PERMISSION IN WRITING OF THE HOSTING CLUB, NAMELY THE GSD CLUB OF SCOTLAND. ALL OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHERS/VIDEO CAMERA PERSONS WILL WEAR BADGES TO THAT EFFECT."
This must be one of the most ridiculas policies I have come across in more than 20 years of exhibiting dogs. just wondered when this became policy and for what purpose ?. As Joyce points out most people have digital cameras myself included not only do we take photo's of our dogs but as most of you know we like to party and normally get some great photo's of us all enjoying ourselves or should that be making a fool of ourselves. but if this policy is enforced there will be no such happy snaps this year. I don't think the committee who decided on this policy have given much thought to the implications this could have on exhibitors or spectators.

should we not be asking the commitee why they have introduced this policy surely taking pictures of dogs cannot be termed un lawful as they are in the ring as show dogs and as long as they are for exhibition then they can be photographed
or is it the case that they ie( the gsd club of scotland) have sold sole rights for photography if so then i personally think that this is a step to far,if i have paid for my entry at a show and i wish to take pics of MY DOGS or have pics taken then that is my right to do so i should add that the slip of paper was not in the schedule's that i got on saturday at the south of scotland show

This is absolutely ridiculous, the 2 day show always attracts foreign visitors, it seems they will be unable to take photo's of the dogs. Maybe they will do a handbag search at the gate, lol, but hey what about those of us that have quality cameras on our mobile phones, will they confiscate our phones at the gate too!!!
Obviously a rule that has not been thought through by the committee, maybe there is a hidden agenda here. |
|
|
|
|
I agree with all the above.
I dont think i have ever heard of a show doing this before.
Would a committee member come on and explain WHY ....I also never had this slip of paper in our schedules.

I too agree with the statements above.
SURELY IT IS UP TO THE EXHIBITOR TO DECIDE WHO PHOTOGRAPHS THEIR DOGS!
The two day national is still a, if not the, premiere show in the UK, many still giving it preference to the UK Sieger. Last year the official photographer sent me many pictures of our dogs, some good, some less good, but in all we had many many pictures - taken by our friends and breed colleagues alike.
And Linda B is right - what about the pictures of people just enjoying their weekend.
I have had some photographs I do not like and would prefer not to see on the internet published of my dogs, but the sentiments above are correct - the dogs are 'on show' and theres not much we can do about poorly taken pictures. However, the GSD Club of Scotland must surely see that they are WRONG in this decision and that shows are for the exhibitors and spectators - most definately not for a regimentary committee or officers.
One final question - WHO EXACTLY WILL BE ALLOWED TO TAKE PICTURES? And how, in light of the many excellent photographers available, was this decision reached?
I await a response from the club on this database ASAP. |

My first thoughts when reading the title of the thread was has the exclusive rights to photography been sold ?.
I like many have a digital camera and am a keen amateur photographer. I took many photos for people at the last 2 day national and many other shows many of which have since been used on web sites. For me it is a hobby and part of an enjoyable day out. Apart from having sold the rights I can see no other explaination as to why the rule has been introduced and look forward to reading an explaination.

Hi All
Never mind the slip of paper I havent even received a schedule but since hearing the above I dont need a schedule now as I won't be going. Never have I heard anything so ridiculous in my life, the end of the show scene is nearer than I thought. To reiterate what I wrote in an email to the BC Sec recently-
"Without doubt I have lived through the Best times for with the state of our show scene today I am glad to be nearing the End Zone rather than the Kick Off and walking away is made so much easier knowing there is little I am going to miss".
Just a thought however, if you all get your camera's out and start taking photo's of dogs and/or each other around the outside of the ring what do you really think they could do???? I would suggest ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!! They would not be able to take your camera's off you without Man Handling you, they could try to ban you from the show but with what grounds? What law or KC rule had you broken? And if you all stuck together would they really want the majority of their exhibitors walking out en-bloc? Doubt it! Certainly wouldnt do much for the validity of their show and shouldnt imagine the judges would be too impressed with their rings being empty due to absenteism, self inflicted by the decisions of a dictatorial, draconion committee.

It is surely now time for Aileen Mathieson or one of the committee to get on here and explain to us all the reasoning behind this decision.
Scotland is a long way up - and with rising costs, and time away from home and kennels, to have a miserable time whereby a bunch of people are running the show to satisfy themselves makes it a reason not to bother.
Come on Committee - speak up, we are all wanting to hear, and this is cheaper than postage to us all to get entries to the show up and running again..... Whilst giving this all some thought, I certainly hope that if it is a designated photographer that has been given rights to photograph OUR dogs, that it will be Fardogart - as I heard tell of a brilliant book that is to be heralded the first for the 2 day show....... is that all scrapped too??? shooting oneself in the foot comes to mind
Hope not - Mo Lakin Mascani GSD`s. |

The rule to stop people taking photos of their own dogs is silly, but perhaps GSD Club of Scotland want to stop photos being taken for commercial gain? Correct me if I am wrong, but the photos taken seemingly for free by Fardogart will eventually end up in a Year Book type of publication which will be forsale in competition with similar publications produced by GSDL and the Breed Council. The books author will profit from this venture.
If this is the reason for the ban, then perhaps its not as silly as it first seems?

PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG, BUT DOES AN OWNER/EXHIBITOR NOT HAVE TO GIVE PERMISSION FOR A PHOTO TO BE TAKEN OR PUT INTO PRINT OF THEIR DOG? JUST REFUSE TO HAVE ANY PHOTO'S OF YOUR DOGS TAKEN.
AS LINDA B STATES US NORTHEAST LOT REALLY DO NEED PHOTO’S JUST TO SEE WHAT WE GOT UP TO THE NIGHT BEFORE.
COME ON COMMITTEE GIVE US SOME ANSWERS. DON’T SPOIL THE SHOW, OUR SHOW SCENE IS IN ENOUGH TROUBLE AT THE MINUTE.

I dont know who, if anyone was profiting from this handbook
this is part of the e mail I received, re: advertising
With permission of the event organisers I am proud to announce that this years Joint Clubs 2 Day UK National GSD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW will be the FIRST EVER UK German Shepherd Breed Show to be extensively featured in Fotos and Word in a custom designed high quality commemorative Hard Backed Glossy Book.
This concept is brought to the UK by FARDOGART FOTO
with the support of The German Shepherd Club of Scotland.
The e mail also says to make all cheques in payment of adverts to The GSD Club of Scotland!!

If I am correct the book is likely to be none profit making. I have been told that the book would be something on the lines of the Photo Irmu Books with photo of dog, 3 generation pedigree and critique. the cost to publish the book would be around £40-£45 each but that if profit made from advertising goes back towards publishing costs this would allow the book to be sold for around £20-£25. A much more affordable price and something I'm all for

Sorry to keep harping on, lol, but I was told to send a cheque payable to the GSD Club of Scotland by the end of April, is this now a non starter, is the handbook cancelled, if FARDOGART are not doing the photo's at the show, how can they publish the book???? It would be nice to have advised the advertisers what was going on. |

Book or no book who is going to come up to you and tell you not to use a camera. As Sue B says what can they do.
Many may want to take photos of the great Scottich views, that's if they actually attend the show now.
The German Sieger (biggest Gsd show in the world) does not TELL people they cant take cameras etc into the show ground.
This doesnt affect Urma sales...but i do think we are talking about a photographer on a different scale (no offence).
Still waiting to hear the reason why. |

Hi Zac,
Having being involved in both the aforementioned publications over the years let me tell you that producing a yearbook, especially one containing lots of coloured photo's is not a cheap process. It involves an investment of many thousands of pounds up front for the books to be produced before being available for sale, and I would advise any one individual contemplating such a venture to prepare for a very slow return on their investment. These type of publications can hardly be described as ever "Flying off the Shelf", not by any stretch of the imagination and now with such a diminishing show scene there is becoming an ever dwindling number of exhibitors left to sell anything to.
Anyhow, in the scheme of things what does any of this have to do with informing the ordinary exhibitor / spectator that they are forbidden to take photo's? The majority of photo's I have used over the years in my BC and GSDL handbooks have more often been those taken either by ourselves or our friends, than those taken by a professional photographer. In which case one could argue that advertisers would be less likely to advertise in the BC or GSDL handbooks through lack of photo's.
The best photo's taken for me recently were by Zep (Mascani) at a show, with his own camera and sent to me via email free of charge, for which I will always be grateful. I was at Crufts all day surrounded by photographers but I did not get one single photo taken of my female or myself with my German friends or Zamp from anyone other than those taken by Lisa, her mum, her dad or myself, despite the presence of professional photographers in the ring. So if we hadnt been allowed to use our camera's I would have no personal memories captured ....Point Proven, methinks !!

Cue - Secretary of the 2 day or one of the committee approved to speak by the rest..... better sort things out quickly, its rumbling on to spoil the show - and its the responsibility of the ones that made the rule to sort it.... can you imagine the lovely atmosphere at the evening party??? if this carrys on? - let alone the ones that turn up at the show.....
I have not received a schedule, and this was the first I noticed today when logging on - but seriously, seriously, if we cant hold what should be a premier GSd show in the UK without people getting their knickers in a twist about photography for goodness sakes - what are things really coming to. Lin Patterson at Fardogart has offered this publication, and I was away when it became up for grabs that you got a place in the book. I missed my chance unfortunately, as all the ads were spoken for as planned in the book - however, I was so keen to take part in such a "first" and in such good quality with a photographer that has proven her expertise in the photography of our breed, that I have been waiting in the wings for some-one to cancel or the like !!! This perhaps suggests that the publication would be popular.
I had no demand made on me to buy, and if I buy one (which if it now gets off the ground I most certainly will, whether Mascani gets a place or not) then I wlll purchase at my own FREE WILL AND DECISION !!! - where on earth is the problem. Do we ask Urma if he is profiteering? As long as we get a good job, and we are offered the book without a demand - what on earth could be the problem.
Please Secretary - organise your committee or yourself to sort this out on this board - before you are ringing around asking people to enter the 2 day show. I accept we all have to ring round for our other shows sometimes in the year, but you could be causing a first in the drop of interest in the premier event, and all because of - well - no-one knows yet......
If this were my clubs Ch show - I would be bending over backwards to put things right quickly. Mo Lakin - Mascani.

hi penny (mo) i dont think it is about them making money from a book or anything else its about telling exhibitors that they cannot photograph their own dogs at the show why would taking pics of your dogs stop people from buying a book with photo's of the show i dont think it will but what it might do is stop a lot of people from going to the national because of this stupid rule after all a dog show is about the dogs and as exhibitors we are entitled to take pics of our dogs

Hi Mo,
In total contrast to your feelings on the matter I have to say I read your post above with much trepidation !! Correct me if I am wrong but what I now understand you to be saying is that the dogs / advertisers appearing in this 2 Day Yearbook has already been decided in that it was offered 'Exclusively' to 'Selected' kennels by Fardogart ! If this is correct then I think this is just as diabolical as well as a travesty !! I am afraid that unlike you Mo, I certainly would not be purchasing a Yearbook with such Exclusive Advertisers and cant imagine (other than the advertisers themselves) why anyone would to. I purchase the Urma book every year without fail but that's because it contains EVERY SINGLE EXHIBITOR, not an elitist pick.
If it is a 2 Day Yearbook how can the decision on who to include be taken before the show has been judged?? I certainly did not receive an invite to publication but then that neither bothers nor surprises me but what about the Newbies to the breed that may be attending the show, did anyone think of them? No wonder our show scene is rapidly dissapearing down the sink hole, with such 'Elitism' now been extended even into the world of advertising. Tell me how many advertisers are to be in the book and I bet I could name almost everyone of them, such is the sucking up, back scratching and fornicating these days.
Should the GSD Scotland Committee decide to do a photography 'U' Turn, I ask myself do I really want to travel such a distance and pay out all that money to attend a show Hosted by a Committee with a Mindset to even think of such an attendance condition of 'Not taking photo's'? This Welcoming Committee makes you feel so Warm and Invited before you arrive or even enter don't they - NOT !!. Wonder what other little surprises they have up their sleeve to embrace you when you arrive??

Am i right in thinking then that only dogs that have booked a space can be is this book.
Or will class winners be in it?????
So you cant take a camera cause you havent booked a space in the book and they only want fardogart photos in the book.
There are a few people who take good photos at shows and if they hadnt bothered we wouldnt get to see half the dogs, they do it for the joy and to share the photos with everybody else and get pleasure from seeing that photo printed in the magazine or even the new Gsd League web site.

I RECEIVED MY SCHEDULE ON SATURDAY AND DID NOT OPEN MY ENVELOPE UNTIL I GOT HOME AND COULD NOT BELIEVE SUCH A STUPID RULE!!! IS BEING INFORCED I FOR ONE WILL BE TAKING MY CAMERA AND IF I WISH TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS OF MY DOGS OR MY FRIENDS WHO ARE MANY HAVING A GOOD TIME I WILL DO SO.IF THE REASON IS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE VENUE BELONGING TO A NAVAL BASE THEN A DIFFERENT VENUE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHOSEN |
|
|
|
|
Hi Smc ,
Who mentioned anything about the Naval Base been the reason? I would suggest this is just an excuse because if the venue is that security sensitive you can bet your bottom dollar they wouldnt have allowed a Dog Show on the premises in the first place.
Whatever excuse will they think of next? The mind Boggles? lol

I am determined to take my camera and I will photograph what I want of the TWO DAY GSD SHOW. I took random photo's at last years British Sieger, and I intend to do the same at the TWO DAY SHOW. I have booked my Hotel, I thoroughly enjoyed my week-end at the Irish two day show last year, and whoa beside ANYONE trying to interfere with my enjoyment in SCOTLAND this year. I will HAGGIS BASH them.
I suggest a simple idea - lets ALL enter, lets ALL be determined to have a fabulous week-end, and most importantly lets ALL of us IGNORE THIS STUPID CAMERA & VIDEO CAMERA RESTRICTIONS.

Rather then me explain how this book was explained to me (by Lin), perhaps its author should speak for herself and assure everyone that no profit is ever intended. I could be wrong in my understanding that this years book is a pilot for future editions from which an income is intended to be made.
I am sure Urma DO make a profit, and theres nothing wrong in that. My point is that GSDL and Breed Council are also trying to make a profit from the photo books they produce. They're not likely to want to encourage competition are they?

Lin needs ALL the support she can muster to produce a high quality hard backed annual book of our BRITISH GSD at our PREMIER SHOWS. I have no doubt that Lin will ensure this exciting project will be something we all will be VERY proud of and something which will be a "must have book" each year, similar to the URMA book. Lin has already secured sponsors and supporters throughout the UK, nobody need feel excluded, this is an ALL INCLUSIVE PROJECT for our GSD breed here in Great Britain. I will support this project in every way possible, adverts in the book, promoting World-Wide sales of this book on my web-site, sponsorship of the book, and any other way possible. We (the British GSD folk) need to realise that the GSD in Great Britain is OUR responsibility, OUR breed, OUR enjoyment, OUR sport and we ALL must ensure it thrives during OUR time. |

Unfortunately i think most people on here have mis-understood this Video Camera & Camera statement issued with the 2 Day schedule.
After making a few phone calls, what i have gathered is that there is no ban on ANYONE taking photographs OUTSIDE THE RING. This rule only applies to Official photographers INSIDE THE RING. I understand this may not have been worded or explained correctly on this slip and has lead to all this confusion.
There ARE rules to this effect if anyone would like to look at RULE 32 in the SKC Schedule, this may help explain the situation regarding photography at Dog Shows.
In this day and age you now must understand about taking photographs at public events i.e. school plays, festivals or so on, these are there for many legal reasons. You also have to remember that this Event is being held on MOD property. So there may have been some stipulations by the MOD on taking photograph of certain parts of their property.
Remember that the kennel club rule on OUTSIDE ATTRACTION must be printed on schedules and be displayed at the Shows but 99% of the people on here don't adhere to this rule and i'm sure that the Committee of the GSD of Scotland are not that stupid enough to ban people from taking photographs, even confiscate cameras or to even think that this would happen is complete stupidity. |
|
|
|
|
If a show makes a profit then Great.
But i dont see what this rule has to do with making a profit.
If they are trying to make a profit why is there limited space in the book, i dont remember seeing an advert to advertise in this book.Didnt even know about this book till now.I may want to advertise in this book with my own photo...what then.
And like i said before i think Urma is a different league .
But also like i said before he never lays down a rule that he has the only camera.
I also intend on taking my camera,i may even buy a bigger one lol.

I hope no one minds me writing but I have some inside knowledge of this book and want to add my tuppence for what it's worth.
The initial concept of this book was to include the 2 day and the British Sieger. Sadly, recently it came to pass that this would no longer include the 2 day show as a main feature. This book is to include the first 3 in each class with a photograph, 3 gen pedigree and show critique. I know 100% that right from the start this was to be a non profit making project from Fardogartfoto, despite the hundreds and possibly thousands of hours work that is required to get the book to it's final publication. The advertising money is going towards reducing the cost of purchase to the exhibitors. This totally unselfish act by Lin is to be applauded and I for one fully support her and this exciting project. She has aleady put in many hours of time and effort to get this off the ground. The book will be sponsored by Ardengrange and I know that if, and it's a big if, there is any profit outstanding then that will be donated to GSD Welfare.
Anyone who knows Lin, will know what a special person she is and that what she is doing for the breed is fantastic. She travels the length and breadth of the country, including Ireland, at her own expense to provide exhibitors with top class photographs of their dogs, always free of charge as she does not wish to make a profit out of photographing the breed she loves. If this project is a success and takes off, then in the future she may look to cover her costs but no more and to me that is wholly acceptable and right, given that this year it will cost a lot both in time and financially and believe me Lin does not have money to burn. Any person wanting pics of their dogs at any show, only need approach Lin and ask her to take them and if at all possible she will and usually have them e-mailed to you within a day or so.
The initial e-mail re adverising went out to the people in Lins address book, but as Lin does not know everyone this did not include everyone but as the project has grown, there is still plenty of advertising space available and an advert is iminent to this effect and space will be sold on a first come first served basis. My understanding is also that advertisers can use whatever photographs they wish in their adverts, and I certainly will in mine, as a mixure of photographers have taken good pics of my dogs.
I sincerely hope that this misunderstanding can be cleared up quickly and then we can get on with the job of making the 2 day the event it should be, a very special one for all involved with as many pictures as people wish to take. I for one will be at the 2 day and hope to see you all there for a great Scottish show. |

Unfortunately i think most people on here have mis-understood this Video Camera & Camera statement issued with the 2 Day schedule.
We have not misunderstood, please dont talk to us like idiots, it CLEARLY states in the schedule "within the precincts of the showground" no mention of 'just in the ring'.
Comments regarding confiscating cameras etc were made tongue in cheek, I think the committee are back peddling, which is fine, just have the guts to say they have made a mistake. |

Heather "If this project is a success and takes off, then in the future she may look to cover her costs but no more and to me that is wholly acceptable and right"
It is right to me too that someone would want to cover their costs, but given that Lin travels length and bredth of the country (and abroad) these costs could be quite substantial. Just a thought though.......Would the tax man be quite so forgiving in not seeing this as a business venture being embarked upon by a person claiming benefit?
The show is quite within its rights to restrict photography within the ring and to appoint their own photographer. The official photographer has served the organisers very well in the past, so what a kick in the teeth if they were to suddenly drop him in favour of a commercial venture.!!
The Breed Council and GSDL rely on income from their year books to serve our breed IMO it is disappointing that exhibitors would rather support an independent.
Zac |

|
Carol, couldnt agree more and its noticeably not just the Committee who are back peddling.
Heather says Lin sent invites to all in her address book yet I did not receive one yet must be in her address book as she has sent photo's to me before, this appears to be backed up by Xfactor (Karen of Tramella) as surely they must have had their dogs photographed before or at least their Kennel and email address should be widely known.
Also Penny (Mo Lakin) told us she just missed out on an advertising space and had put herself on the waiting list in the hope some advertiser cancelled, though Heather now reports there is still plenty of space. I have nothing against Lin, indeed I was one ot those who championed her in the beginning arranging for her to be 'Inside' the ring at West Yorks Championship Show, THE FIRST Breed Club Show I believe to organise this for Lin, OUTSIDE of SCOTLAND (though I am prepared to stand corrected) I certainly know Terry Hannan was unaware of her prior to me arranging this, hence the reason Terry knew enough about her to go out of his way to get permission for Lin to be in the ring at Crufts.
I just do not like underhandedness, never have, never will and as for you David Payne, I am surprised with all your democracy background that you come out championing something that on the surface appeared elitist, one can only assume that you were one of those original 'Exclusively Selected Advertisers'.
What ever happened to just telling the TRUTH? It's getting so some of us can't see the crap for the B***Sh**. If you wanted Exclusive Advertisers just say so, its your darn book so admit it, sad to say this breed is now riddled with too much arse licking with a scarsity of balls !!

Couldnt agree more with Sue B. Its the what's beneath the surface that troubles me. Here we have, it seems, SoS GSD Club involved in a project which will eventually financially benefit just one individual. Never was any donation to Welfare mentioned until now. Is that just an over sight I wonder, or an attempt to plaicate us all and make everything all right?
I have nothing personal against Lin either, it just seems strange to me that a club would go to the extent of putting advertising payments through their books. Would they do this for every member who didn't want to be seen to have an income? I think not.
If this isnt by invite only, then why have the additional spaces not been offered to all via GSD press (magazine or breed notes) and why is Mo Lakin on a reserve list? Sorry, but there are too many unanswered questions for my liking.
Is this photographic record just one persons hobby which the advertisers are funding? or is it another attempt by unhappy people within the breed prefering to support anything that undermines GSDL and Breed Council YET again?

All,
I have to mention that I have seen the original email which was sent from Lin at Fardogart on the 24/11/2007, I can also see Sue B's email address on said email aswell as Mo Lakin and many many others. My own email identified this particular email as junk mail and as a result the email itself went straight into my delete basket. I was fortunate enough to have spoken to Lin the same day (on a seperate matter) and she mentioned the email, at which point I checked my junk mail folder and located it. Perhaps there has been an issue with some other folks email addresses doing the same thing as mine.
Lin very much wants to promote the breed through her Free of Charge photography, it is her love for the breed and passion for Photography which makes her photo's so good.
I am sure there are very good reasons why you have not heard much from Lin with regards to the current position and this is because it has only just been resolved. I am sure she will update everyone in the not to distant future on the forthcoming book.
The fact remains that we all attend dog shows for our own enjoyment, we all take photo's whether inside or outside the ring or at the night time event during the 2 days. The fact is that this enjoyment has been taken away by the rules which are being imposed unfairly in my opinion. I took numerous photo's at the Irish 2 day last year for my own personal enjoyment, the ones which were good I emailed on to the kennel who owned the dog I may have snapped and I can say that I am proud that some of them have used them on their website.
I am aware that there was mention of the MOD imposing the rules due to securtiy breaches and this was confirmed by telephone to my mum when she enquired to one of the committee. I find it difficult to understand why the MOD would impose such a rule given that in my personal experience I have and many of my Car Club friends been invited in to RAF Leuchars whilst the base was operational where we took photo's of our cars in very close proximity to the fighter jets etc... Perhaps if this is the case the MOD can confirm by letter to the committee which can can be shared with the exhibitors/spectators. I for one would love to continue my trend at the 2 day national and snap away at the dogs inside and outside the ring.

I am not going to get into unnecessary debate over this exciting project, which only serves to undermine it. However, I will not see inaccuracies going unanswered. Sue, I cannot say why you are not in Lins address book. To be honest, I don't have everyone in my address book, who has sent me an e-mail or from whom I have received one. This project in its initial stages had very limited advertising space. Since then it has developed and now has increased advertising space. To be honest when this was initially discussed the enthusiasm of advertisers took over and all who had heard about it inundated Lin. There was no deliberate intent in my opinion to exclude anyone and if you knew Lin as I do, you could be assured of that.
Zac your comments are not helpful or constructive. Trying to be smart about the taxman!! I am pretty sure that Lin would have no intention of claiming costs from trips to all shows or abroad from this book but in my conversations with her these would merely be the cost involved in travelling to the British Sieger and possible the 2 day if they were involved next year and as she usually travels with us FOC she would have minimal costs i.e. possibly accommodation. To me this is not unacceptable and to be honest, I have told her she should take more but she will not hear of it, despite my protestations. So please, please do no tar Lin with the same brush as others that only want to make money! So, given all the above I am pretty sure that tax man can rest easy for now And just to makes things clear the South of Scotland GSD & ABTC are not involved in this project, sadly no Scottish club is. Your comments re the League and BC publications are also without foundation as this entire project including the costing etc have been put before the Working Party for the British Sieger Event and approved and this includes the League and the BC!!!! And, yes since inception people involved have been aware it was never a profit-making project and that if there were, it would go to welfare. So, this is not a recent thing to placate people. You only have to look at the figures, which I am sure Lin will gladly provide you with if you contact her to know that this project never was likely to make any profit. As this project has developed it was fully intended that in the near future advertising of it would take place, via a number of outlets and hopefully still will.

Zac you also write
"The show is quite within its rights to restrict photography within the ring and to appoint their own photographer. The official photographer has served the organisers very well in the past, so what a kick in the teeth if they were to suddenly drop him in favour of a commercial venture!"
Yes, you are absolutely right in your first sentence, however the insert in the catalogue is restricting this within the entire showground. As for the official photographer, well until very recently this was Lin as you will very well know so in my opinion, not so much a kick in the teeth eh? I just hope that whoever it is, won't be looking to profit and be charging money for photographs as that would be a travesty, particularly as the club have the offer of Lin, who would not charge anyone for her photographs. Which do you think the exhibitors would prefer????????? I know which I would
Now can we please get back to the thread and look forward from here with positive and constructive comments, rather than negative and divisive ones which is not helping the GSD Club of Scotland who we fully support as a Scottish club and want to see put on a successful Scottish show to remember.

Mandy,
Thanks for that info re the e-mail sent in November and I really hope this shows to some people that Lin has and will never intend this to be anything but what it really is, for everone involved in GSD, evolved from her passion for the breed and photgraphy. This project really could give us something special any hopefully we all benefit from that. Some of you will ask, why am I defending her. Well the answer to that is, I know her, I support her and I know deep down her motives are pure, despite what a small minority may try to slurry with their comments. I have seen what Lin can and does do and the work and effort she puts in to her photography, with no thought for payment or otherwise. Anyone who truly knows Lin will know the absolute truth in what I say. If you don't know her, then I suggest you take some time to speak with her and get to know her at the next shows and hopefully you will realise the passion and talent that she has and this is only just the beginning. |

Heather, is it any wonder theres confusion? First the advertising is selectively offered and sponsorship is requested for what is said to be " Joint Clubs 2 day UK National GSD Championship Show will be the first ever UK GS Breed show to be extensively featured in fotos and word". Now a third party tells us thats not correct.
Then we're told its non profit making, but now its that any profit will cover the photographers selective costs involved in the hobby.
Some of us, like Linda B, believed the book was to be along the lines of Urma Thats stretching the imagination a bit dont you think? And no, actually, I didnt know that Lin had been the official photographer or that all of that had now changed as well. Confused? you bet I am!
As good as everyones photos are, I think I'll stick to taking my own now that cameras are allowed.

Sorry Zac, but to me there is no real confusion. The advertising was NOT selectively offered but sent to who Lin had in her address book, including Sue B despite what she has said, as is shown by Mandy Macs entry above. The project was initially to be a venture featuring the 2 day but sadly that has recently fallen through, so it will now only feature the British Sieger, as well as a few other things, such as a small part of the german sieger show, including British participants.
It is non profit making this year and any cost covering suggestion is only to be considered for next year and is not absolute.
The book will be 'along the lines' of an Urma style as it will be of a similar but not the same size, it will be hard backed colour and it will feature the first 3 in each class with a pic, pedigree and critique, but it won't be URMA. Then again, he does charge 800 Euro's a page to advertise and you pay a considerable amount more to purchase it ( although to me worth every penny ) and has a worldwide market, built up over numerous years. Boy, give Lin a chance eh?? At least, like the majority of us, lend a bit of your support and let's see how good it can be. But no one is twisting your arm, we all have a choice and mine is to support Lin and this project 100% .
I am sorry if you find what is happening confusing but hope that some of it is clearer now and we can all move on from this and look forward to a great 2 day national show. It's a real shame things have changed from the original plans but such is life. It has, there's no point in crying about it, we just have to look forward and hope that both the 2 day and this fabulous book can are successful. |

I was advised not to reply to this thread this evening but so many people are so quick to jump on me and try to blacken me that I feel I have no option..
I am really upset at all of this . The reason no one prior to the original email was contacted re advertising after the initial email was because the small 20 page alowance for it was booked within 2 hours. There was no point in contacting anyone else at that point as there was no space left to offer,,,I emailed the people I did because they were the addresses i had and a few additonal via CHAMPDOGS list but it was publicly advertised on my site for about 4 weeks prior for all to see had they looked. and if you look at the list of people emailed its certainly not elitist .
In answer to those re time passed since then basically I have not been able to comment on the project as I have been waiting since then for OFFICIAL permission from the British Sieger Working Party to announce the project publicly .. BUT I have answered all queries/questions when asked privately .. I emailed carole Lister again this weekend asking if I could be given official confirmation so that I could publicly announce the whole project . Which I intended to do as soon as I had said permission. The new 440 page project with much increased advertising would have allowed everyone the chance to advertise .. I had/have booked an advert in the next league magazine to say as much... ..... But I wasn't prepared to preempt permisson and spoil the chances of official backing.Tester books went infront of the British Sieger Working Party's last meeting and I am lead to believe official backing is to be granted . so all i can say is Please do not throw knives at when you are not in possession of the facts!!! Also lease note: Advertising was not to line my pockets but to off set the print costs.. There are people who still dont put £££ first and I cant believe I am being shot down by some of you for doing this ..
You comment on my benefit status Zac , how do you know what my employment status is? This really makes me angry the fact I feel I have to come on and defend myself from a screed of assumptions.. As it happens yes I am on benefits at present after just finshing a 6 month business trial via Sciottish enterprise , does that make me a villan, it certainly does not? I hope to have a successful small business regarduing my artwork and am working hard to source all the help available to do this in Scotland. I didn't charge for photographs when I had the freedom to charge what ever I wanted because profit is not my motivation.. but again that appears to be a bad thing to some? I just dont get it!
I have given the costings for the project to anyone that has asked .I have nothing to hide..
And NOTE : I was meant to be the official photogrpaher for the 2 day show but not at the exclusion of other cameras ,I felt i had to resign this positon before I was sacked as i just would not agree to pay them whatever they decided for the privilege of a non profit book . I wanted to try and provide the best images I could for exhibitors with no charges for them so felt I had to step down. If that makes me unreasonable then shoot me but i was actually trying to save exhibitors money not take it from them!.. It takes more to make the world go round than money .. In this case I hoped a publication might lift breed morale ( despite the images not being of URMA quality)
Sue B,I am particulary hurt by your comments, I am grateful for the chance you gave me at West Yorks , that wont change. You were in my original |

Sue B,I am particulary hurt by your comments, I am grateful for the chance you gave me at West Yorks , that wont change. You were in my original list via CHAMP DOGs as you can see and I have emailed you numerous times since then with photos etc but you never / rarely reply to my correspondance ,,I sent you a CD after W.Yorks and never heard from you either.. Sometimes i just dont know where I stand with people and thats not a nice feeling either particularly when i feel i am indebted to them for their help.. Perhaps email is failing at both our ends. But as you can see you were definitely included on my list . ..
Those concerned with the working party for the British Sieger can confirm my requests to go public ,I certainly haven't wanted to keep anyone in the dark or exclude anyone but it is not my place to prempt the leading GSD bodies in the UK ....
I have never professed to be URMA or at URMA's level but it doesn't stop me wanting to try to get something off the ground in the uk regarding our own dogs .. Nobody is else is trying too but it is increasingly more clear that its hard to do anything right in this breed..
Right now I have a had about as much as I can take ,I just cant understand how good intention can be twisted into something sour .. if it makes anyone feel better then continue to question my ethic/motivation.I personally have just have had enough ,its just not worth the hurt.. |

Heather:
As the 2 day show statement was on your page of this thread, can you clear up for me 2 points regarding the taking of photos please.
Is the " Official photographer " going to ask permission of the dog owners, not all owners seek publicity or see a photo as a means to advertise their wares. Some owners have good jobs and don't need their dogs to provide an income.
And secondly whats to stop people taking photos of winners etc from outside the ring, with a half decent camera and long lens this would be simple.
Really it would have all been better of the 2 day committe not to have had these unworkable rules. |
|
|
|
|
Well, to the negative minority. I really hope you are happy now! No one should be bullied in this way and made to feel that they have to come on here and defend themselves to you! Some have questioned Lin's integrity and believe me when you have some and someone questions it, it is not a nice feeling. Lin has bagfuls of this particular quality and this is the sole reason why she has refused to try and make money of people through her photography, it's just a pity some didn't realise this sooner and just saw fit to criticise. |

|
Thanks Heather for clearing up a few of my concerns.
440 pages of advertising eh? Well that certainly will go a long way towards the £1000's Sue B predicted it would cost to produce such a book.
I dont not support the venture, I just wasn't as informed as you seem to have been, and neither it seems, were a few others.
I would say that it surprises me if the organisers of British Sieger are allowing photos taken by their official photographer to be used in this way, but it wont be the first thing that has made me raise an eyebrow today

Pencil,
I have nothing to do with the 2 day show. It was only started on the threat for our club, following some other comments to congratulate winners etc.
However, in answer to your question I suggest you read the latest statement made by the 2 day committe in relation to this point, which is further up this thread or on it's own thread, from where I cut and pasted it onto this as this one was about that particular issue. I hope this makes sense |

Hi Lin,
Lets start by saying there must be a problem in the email linkage between us because I have heard nothing from you since you sent me the West Yks CD, which Yes I did send a thank You to you via email ! I dont know what shows you have been at but apart from the photo's you took at Fife GSD champ Show last May (where I was first made aware of you) I have not received any other photo's from you since, so can only presume that you were not present at either of the two shows where my female took her 2nd and 3rd CC 's (including BOB) or at the Irish 2 Day National where my other female won the PG Bitch Class or the 2007 British Sieger where my female finished 3rd in Open!!. Is that correct? In which case it is quite some while since I received anything from you via email.
As for making me out to be the bad guy here, it must have been obvious to all (including yourself) that along with others including Xfactor this thread was the first I had heard anything about this Photo book or the decision taken by the 2 Day Show committee re photographs, so why single me out and make me out to be the person who hurt you the most ? I was just reacting to what was being told to all of us reading this thread, so dont think you have a monopoly on being hurt, I think you will find it to be a two way street. As for Heathers comments on confusion, for people hearing about all of this for the first time it WAS confusing, not all of us constantly have the ears of yourself or the Scottish GSD Club.
Anyway enough said, I apologise if I misjudged you and it certainly was not my intention to upset you but since you appear to have taken umbridge at not receiving a reply from me re the West Yks CD you sent, perhaps it true to say you also misjudged me.
Regards
Sue B |

Pencil, please!!! It's been a long day! You asked me questions, that I cannot possibly answer, well one of them anyway. How the heck do I know what their official photographer is going to do in relation to asking permission? Ask the committee or the photographer. As for your second question, nothing is stopping them and yes it would be simple. Does this satisfy your needs?
Zac, the book is a total of 440 pages, including the advertising, so no it will not pay for the project, hence the need for sponsorship. I am better informed than most, because I spend time with Lin and count her as a friend. You would all have been equally informed in due course with the advert. And why wouldn't the British Sieger want photo's used in this way. They are used in Our Dogs, Dog World, BC Magazine and on numerous websites. This book is to promote the breed, is that not a good thing?
You know what, like Lin I am sick of trying to defend and justify. If your not happy then don't participate in it, it's that simple. I'm tired now, so goodnight. |

Heather,
You know only too well I speak as I find, I have never made a habit of only telling people the things they want to hear whilst saying something entirely different behind their backs, I leave that to the sneaky, snivelling cowards that frequent our rings these days as well as this board.
If, as it appears from your carefully worded comments above you want to take issue with me over this then please stop doing so by inuendo, just come out and say so. There is far too much back-biting going on in this breed as it is without you joining in. Oh and for those of you who dont know the difference, back biting is done by those who say nasty things behind others back, not by people who have the guts to be up front and speak their thoughts out loud, giving everyone the chance to clear the air and sort things out. I find those who prefer to say nothing and keep their head down in public are the ones most likely to stab you in the back.
Regards
Sue B |

Interesting, I wonder if it will be illegal to bring camera's and video equipment to the next USA Sieger Show? Maybe they don't want the bad exposure that tUScA is getting now with the release of video that has caused such a stir. |

Heather, I never said that 440 pages of adverts would pay for the entire project!.
I simply said it would go along way towards it especially being that the book is no longer the first ever record of a "UK Championship show in fotos and word", nor is it to be offered 'Exclusively' to 'Selected' kennels by Fardogart which is how the venture was presented to myself and many others. Advertising space was apparently snapped up on that basis and its only now that people are being informed the author withdrew from what most people would consider to be the privilage of being invited as official photographer for one of this countrys most prestigious events. The reason we are given is because hosts wanted rights over the photographs. Is that really so unreasonable of them?
I am sure that money from book sales will also go a long way towards covering the printing cost of this venture/hobby which is probably why the author would rather have full control.
The book now seems to be concentrating on the British Sieger. Not a Champ show, but never the less a GSD show, and yes, their official photographs do appear in Our Dogs, Dog World, BC Magazine and on numerous websites. However, for them to appear in a private book must indeed be a first based entirely upon trust in the photographer once they relinquish control.
And to Lin, get a grip of yourself woman! are people not entitled to wonder what is happening when the goal posts are constantly being moved? Not everyone is constantly logged on to your website trying to keep track of the constant changes. You don't have the monopoly in feeling hurt and misled. In fact I would say you have been responsible for some of it.

Sue,
Let's get one thing straight. I posted my reply or was doing so as you were obviously doing yours, that much I can see from the times. After posting mine, I then read yours. My reply was in direct reply to Pencil and Zac, not that I have to justify that to anyone. If I had issue with anything you had said, believe me I would state it and state it clearly. I have no problems speaking my mind or defending my opinions, thank you very much. If you feel there is something I should take issue over with you then please state it and I will.
You seem to be reading something into this that is simply not there. |
|
|
|
|
Again, I post one reply and there is another message there, from Zac. So much for going to bed eh?
Zac, your comments re why Lin is no longer the official photographer for the 2 day are misinformed. The reasons are not for me to say but my understanding is that it was more to with the committe wanting some financial gain, which was simple not feasable to offer, from a non profit making project. You mention book sales covering cost. These books are costing in excess of £40 to purchase, even as a bulk order. They will be sold at around £23 - £25, so where is the profit! To be honest, the more books that sell the less likely there will be any profit as more money is then required to cover the loss on each book. I know this makes no sense but the advertising money is covering this loss. Sales will not see a profit believe me. Please contact Lin direct for the actual figures on paper which have been passed to the Working Party and the sponsers, which may explain the financial position to you more clearly than I.
No breed club to my knowledge has ever tried to control the rights to photographs taken at a show and I hope that is not the case on this occasion.
Re the privelage to been asked to take photographs at a show like this. I can assure anyone interested, that when this offer came in, Lin was absolutely over the moon and just couldn't believe it. She certainly felt they had bestowed on her a great honour and set about her task with great enthusiasm, even designing their 2 day Logo for them, ( at no cost of course) Lin is extremely gutted she is no longer carrying out this privilage.
And, like last year's Sieger, when there were numerous photographers in the ring. How do you propose they control all the photographs taken by them? |
|
|
|
|
It is obvious that for many people in our breed "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". They very quickly assume they "know it all", when they clearly do not! They are very quick to condemn without full and accurate facts, continually assuming many things while still short on facts.
I do not consider myself elite, and I leave democracy for when it is relevant. Fairness is very important to me, and yet I see very little of it. However I am certain of one thing in our breed, there are enough people involved in our breed who are more than capable of destroying any beneficial GSD breed initiative before it gets of the ground.
I only wish they could match their vitriolic comments with positive action for our breeds’ future. I have witnessed on here the most deplorable and disgusting assassination attempt of one of the nicest, most genuine and generous people in our breed. We certainly do not deserve her, and she certainly does not deserve the ill informed and presumptuous rhetoric spewed forth with such alacrity and denigration on this thread.
Our breeds show scene is facing doom and gloom here in Great Britain, being destroyed from the inside by the very people who profess to care about our breed.
I suggest you all await the advert about this planned book, if Lin is still inclined to proceed with it. Our breeds show scene is hanging by a thread, we can all shoulder some of the blame for its demise during the last decade or so.
I hope it is not too late for us all to start pulling together and start supporting those amongst us who really can make a difference, if only for the sake of our dogs.
