Green tripe stinks, but dogs love it. I don't know the quality of the product you've listed, but you can find more here: http://www.greentripe.com/

If you can get past the appearance - and smell - I think it's one of the best things you can feed your dog. I buy mine frozen from www.omaspride.com 5lbs of coarse ground tripe runs about $11.00........ I've never used the canned, but I'm sure it's more expensive over time than buying in bulk.
All my dogs have eaten it with relish - I actually found out about it when trying to put a diet together for a fellow with kidney disease: he was very limited in what he could eat, but because tripe is low in phosphorus it was on the list of approved food items, and he did very well on it for a long time. Highly nutritious for a once or twice a week feeding!

Susan, did you add yours to kibble, or was your dog eating Raw? I use Solid Gold canned greentripe to add just a scoop to my dogs kibble. My dog has EPI and the enzymes don't always taste so good, so I add the smelly tripe to help her out!! Could I use the ground tripe the same way? Looks awfully expensive to ship though.

It looks good for a dog but its sure looks smelly and very unpleasent to look at or touch.
I am sure its good for your. My worry is that most of the products need to be kept frozen and my dogs dont like food that is frozend for a long time |

You all say its good, but haven't really answered the question asked. I, too, would like to know-Good for WHAT? What is the BENEFIT of feeding it-to make less pleasant things taste better, or is there more nutritional benefit than that? One of our local grocery stores recently got a fresh supply of it in(frozen) reasonably priced. I've heard of it(tripe), but didn't know what the benefit of it is. I already feed a nice kibble with added ground beef and vitamin C and none of my GSDs have any health issues or problems. What would be the health benefit of adding tripe, especially if its so nasty like you all say? Would LOVE to know! THANKS!! |

Bleached (grocery store tripe) has virtually no nutritional value--other than in menudo. Raw green tripe contains all sorts of digestive enzymes (which would be denatured and rendered useless by cooking) which greatly enhance digestion. I use Oma's pride Performance Dog (actually made by Bravos) which also contains (in addition to the green tripe) beef, trachea, and ground bone. Of course, they get other souces of raw, meaty bones--pluse one meal with grain-free kibble. I buy only enough to keep frozen 4-5 weeks. |

Anjablue, did you mean buying frozen would be cheaper than canned?
i heard really good about it.
is it best to mix with kibbles in daily meal and provide?
would be glad to hear the testimonials......about the real benefit

Surely there are some slaughter houses that can supply it in your areas? I feed tripe every couple of weeks until it runs out. I buy it in frozen 50 pound blocks. I got my cat to eat it a few times, but then he started turning his nose up at it. The dogs are still nuts over it. I have to wonder if it is not harder to feed a cat a raw diet than dogs. He can be so picky at times, but he always eats his "fast food", dry kibble.

As Louise said, the white tripe that you find in the grocery store has been cleaned, scalded and bleached. It has almost no nutritional value for the canine.
Green tripe does not necessarily refer to it's color. In this instance it refers to the fact that it has not been touched. Not cleaned, not bleached and not scalded. It's actual color is brown, however, sometimes there will be a greenish tint due to the grass or hay the animal ate just before slaughtering.
Nothing beats the "green" tripe from a freshly slaughtered animal.
I get it when I butcher but, You won't be able to purchase it from processing plants and frozen lockers. Special facilities are needed, as once the stomach is opened, its an E Coli nightmare. The USDA will come down hard on anyone who would mess with it.
The Green Tripe is available quite a few places on line.
A friend of mine in Canada told me, he had purchased a large amount of green tripe.
He went on to say he had an old style washer, with a ringer. He would wash and clean the tripe and wring it.
In other words, he would wash the viatmins and nutrients out of the tripe.

Ah. I gotcha. Thank you, Louis, for explaining the difference between green and the freezer-store type. So it aides in digestion for GSDs, or does it serve other useful purposes? |

Hey Abhay, couldn't a person just buy whole stomachs at private slaughter houses or something? I know that the rules have changed since I picked up bone and meat scraps from a privately owned slaughterhouse near the farm I used to own in Arkansas many years ago. They processed home raised animals and deer for a fee. They would even give me bone dust and such, all for free. I didn't know to ask for the stomach then,or they would probably have given it to me. Very nice neighborly people.

www.greentripe.com has an amazing product called Xcalliber green tripe. It has bone, and all kinds of other organ meat in there!
Many of our members in this region have used this before a show or a competition, or even as a raw feeding diet, it works well for building muscle, and the dog LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I noticed Jager a little on the skinny side, he's at that age now, so I started feeding it to him again, and he is looking really great in just a few days!
Expensive to ship, but if you can get several people to buy together it is worth it! And yes it stinks, but if you were ever around dairy farms, the smell is very familiar!

I agree with KariM that Greentripe.com makes excellent products. However, I buy the Performance Dog directly (no additional shipping charges) from my Oma's Pride dealer who lives in my town. It costs me $11.50 (plus sales tax) for a 5# roll. A roll lasts for 4 GSD's perhaps a week. This product has nutritional values that extend beyond aiding the digestion.
In the State of California, it is illegal for slaughter houses to sell green tripe. Perhaps, it may be different if you have them slaughter your own cattle.
My dogs are 7, 9.5, and 12 years old, respectively. They are very youthful and athletic. The 12-year-old female walks on her hind legs--can jump straight up in the air and on and off the grooming table. |

AKVeronica, I know the type of home owned Mom and Pop type processing businesses that you are talking about. They will usually allow anyone to rummage through their scrap barrels, and take what trim, fat and bones one can haul away. These places have the huge stomachs in barrels. I imagine if they didn't see you, and if you could somehow lift and transport the huge water baloon like substance home?
If you ask any of these places to sell you a stomach or green tripe, they will immediately refuse. No matter how private or small the business, they know better. Now I can only speak for my state and the bordering states to me, but I am in Cattle Country. Maybe things are done different in Arkansas. |

It's been about ten years, since I lived in that farm in Arkansas near the Mom and Pop slaughterhouse, Abhay. As for getting the huge stomachs home....where there's a will, there's a way. :-)

Veronica, I would be curious to what they would have said, but I bet they would have told you, No Way.
I don't know why it is, but every small processing business I have ever seen, is owned by a husband and wife. They are always either fighting, or thinking about divorce, or going through a family crisis. Another thing is sometimes they leave a 22 shell casing in the damn meat. |

What about mad cow? I think I have it. Denny Crane!
.22"s ?? Thats cold. I bit into a high powered projectile from a .22 caliber once in a venison steak, in a state where thats not a legal weapon for hunting deer. I could have turned the guy in for poaching I guess.
I'm sorry I dont have anything intelligent to say about green tripe.

Kool,
If you are in the bay area, it is cheaper to just go down to Hollister and pick it up! |

If you are friendly with your local mom-and-pop butcher, it may be possible to get fresh green tripe before it is even frozen. But they can't take money for it and you may have to come around midnight to pick it up when no one is around (including the inspectors). :-) Worth to do all that for the dogs though :-)
In the wild wolf pack, the alpha male and female get to feed first. They eat the stomach and intestines. Everybody else follows after and eat the rest. |

I do believe I will ask my various friends that raise their own animals and have the farm kill truck come, to save me the green tripe from here on out. I have a couple lambs scheduled myself so that should be a start. |

I fed tripet. I throw it in 1x or 2x a week. Don't have any compliants. It does smell a bit, but not too bad. The dogs love it!

KariM,
howz your feeding quantity of Xcalliber green tripe per day/week.
|
|
|
|

I fed it as a supplement, so my dogs each got about 1/2 of a pound or so, a 2 pound chub would last about two days. My friend Nancy fed it alone and I think she fed about 2 pounds per day, plus kibble at night I think 2 cups, for both of her males. They were also working quite often as well!!
I think it just depends if you are going to use it as a supplement or a main dish
|
|
|
|
|
KariM, do you mix with kibble and you provide less kibble mixed with 1/2lb of tripett.

I feed it in a different feeding than my kibble. I feed kibble at night and the tripe in the morning. I just watch the dog's weight to see if the kibble and tripe together seems to be the right amount, they can get chunky quick if they are not working very much! |
