A few years back one supplement we fed our show and cutting horses was rice bran added to their pellets or alone.  They loved it once they got used to it.  It was a good source of fats and oils.  The horses coats were shiny slick and they held their wait well.  Does anybody use rice bran for their dogs as part of the diet?

We feed our cutting horses rice bran....great for the coat. I do wonder what it would do for a GSD? I have one older male who always has a dry seeming coat, sheds a lot, just dull...give him fish oil and lots of other fatty additives, but he stays the same. The other six dogs have awesome coats.

I wonder how many others on here have horses and/or cutting horses... Kind of off track, but I've always been curious how many of us had GSDs and horses....

In comparison of horse to dog supplements.  I think if you look at the ingredient of Solid Gold for horses and dogs, they are very close or the same.  It is packaged in smaller bags for dogs.

Horses are herbivores - dogs are carnivores.  Rice bran is appropriate for horses, so it benefits them appropriately.  Rice bran for dogs, while it may make their coats look better, it will negatively affect their digestive system as it will have to work harder to digest the inapproriate materials.  A healthy coat is achieved appropriately with a species appropriate diet and fish oil supplementation.  Nothing else is needed.

Thanks Gunnar, that was a good answer.  I do add fish oil supplement and their coats are shiney and healthy.  I was just curious as it had worked so well with the equines.

I use "coat boost" by CPN and it does contain stabilized rice bran as the second ingredient and my dogs have beautiful soft, shiny coats and no digestive problems.

Animules - salmon oil (capsules drained or from a bottle) or fish body oil capsules (drained) are typically the only supplements needed by appropriately fed dogs.  The oil is fantasic and benefits coats greatly.
