What do you do with the poo? (34 replies)

Just curious at what different ways people dispose of there poo collections.I have a big hole in the back of my property away from everything that is used then I cover and start new ones as needed.I know there are bigger and better ideas and just curious on how people manage there daily deposits. |

I am lucky in that there are council "poo bins" available. I collect the waste and deposit it into these.
I have some friends who use wormeries successfully in recycling the waste - but they only have a couple of dogs so I dont know whether it would work with larger numbers of dogs. |

I only have a several dogs and it accumaletes quickly. I can only imagine what some of the bigger kennels have to deal with. |

Tree's!!! I have lots of tree's....:)
I would not choose to put it on a garden but it does a lot of good for the tree's. You can mix it with grass clippings and compost it. Or as some do, you can bag it and pay to have it removed with the rest of your trash. I pay a dollar a bag and I have to deliver it to the dumpster. You can put it in a grocery sack and leave it on your neighbors doorstep, then light the bag and yell fire!! Or if you have room spred it out thin in a spot and just let it decompose, away from windows ..lol
I'm in the country so I really dont have this problem with poop.
Please wash your hands now. |

I'm in the country, too, but we do have a disposal problem. We're surrounded by corn and soy fields but the farmers don't want raw dog droppings because they're too hot which is the same reason why we don't use undigested (not composted) waste on our trees or garden. It may work for some but, in general, it doesn't.
The occasional turd in a corn field isn't a problem but the 30 pounds or so we generate in a week is. We have a decent stand of woods where we could dump it but they're a goodly way away from the dog yard and getting it there would be a PITA.
Can't dig a hole big enough because of the slate. Can't dump it down the toilet because the septic tank isn't equipped to deal with 30 additional pounds of excrement a week.
We pay the waste disposal company to haul it away. |

My son dug with a back hoe , a large 6 ' x 8' x 8' and built a top and picture framed the pit with metal and has a metal opening door that scoots open with a handle...you slide door open and dump the poop in...in the bottom it is covered with lyme and after it is closed there is no smell , no flies no odor.
This is done at the back side of three acres. The front yard and part of kennel poop is bagged and goes into a dumpster that picks up trash once a week...Black garbage bags by Hefty are the best and I spray the cans and the bags with odoban.

With just three it's not too terrible. Plus when I'm out training a couple of times a week, there's poop on the road. I double bag it and then put it in a empty dog food bag. Then it goes out with the regular trash. That usually keeps the garbage men happy! We are lucky in our city, waste pick up is included with our taxes and what not. I've also found that with our garbage men, treat them good and they'll treat you good. LOL We were having work done on the house and for a few bucks, they would be up the "extra" trash, not even on trash day (once a month). This worked out to be much less expensive than a dumpster. And what's funny now, is that they definitely remembered, as they bring the trash cans back up the driveway. I don't see them doing that for anyone else. |

I wonder what the largest working line German Shepherd kennel in the United States does with all their poop? |

I have a boarding kennel, so there is lots of poo picked up here on a daily basis. I have a bucket with trash bag inside it, scoop poop and place it in the bag inside the bucket - when it's full I close the bag securely, and place the closed trash bag into an empty dog food bag, close that (just wrap the top closed somewhat) and place that into the garbage container which is picked up every week. Works great, very easy and very clean.

At least and thank goodness my dogs that run loose go in the woods and not around the house or in my front yard. I have a pile next to the kennel thats left over from winter that I guess I'll let compost and spred it out later this summer. Its more straw than crap and its not going to break down I figure so I will dump all my grass clippings on it all summer. I was bright enough to put my kennels down wind of the house..:).
I wish I had a backhoe Rose.... must be nice.. |

I say save all of the poop and make sure it doesn't dry up. when someone pisses ya off like a neighbor.. use some of that poop for revenge.. When that pissy neighbor of yours comes out, use your wifes or your bra (the bigger the better) as a slingshot and insert the poop in the bra cup and sling over to your neighbor.... don't forget to call out your neighbor so he/she can get it in the face :)
if it offends, sorry just in an evil mood |

I worked in a large kennel years ago that had an interesting way of dealing with the poop. We made Poop Soup. It is as gross as it sounds. We had large buckets filled half way with water. We would scoop the poop and deposit into the buckets making a disgusting watery sludge. We had a large drain in the center of theplace that emptied into the sewer system, kind of like a large toilet.
At my shelter, we have a very high cat population as well as large transports of dogs. We scoop and deposit into contractor bags, and toss in the dumpster.
At home, I use a dry wall bucket lined with heavy duty bag, scoop and fill, then take the to dump a couple times a week. |

If you have enough land you can dig pit/s and cover the layers with lime. Many moons ago, I had 12 to 15 dogs at any given time, lived on a farm and disposed of the waste that way. Now that I only have one, it's a lot simpler. |
