Wire-coated GSD? (23 replies)

Man oh man, as if we weren't having enough controversy over long coat GSD's, now we've got these wahoo's on the internet promoting wire-coat GSD's. Ridiculous! Look at that coarse, wiry coat! Rain and snow will go right through that!

For the GSD lover who has everything.... a GSD shaped topiary wire frame. Wow! Talk about "growing your own". LOL. At least now I know what to buy my dog friends for Christmas.

Yes, this is for real. There really is a web site selling dozens of dog breeds in topiary form. God bless the Internet! |

Come on, share the web site. |

This is too funny. I have been lurking these boards for years, mostly just because I love Shepherds. Here I am sitting on my lunch hour at work and find this. I actually work for the manufacturer of these topiary dogs. The Shepherd is actually based on our now deceased beautiful sable GSD Zauber vom Rosenhof. He was the most fantastic companion. (not titled or anything just a great dog) I never thought he would be a topic of one of the threads here on this forum, even if it is just his wire form. :)

At one club i went too, over here i saw a wire haired G.s. it looked like ripples across its back, The Old Guy who owned it was training it but never did protection with it, i thinkhe kept it as a house pet mostly. but in different hands it may well have been okay in protection the same as other G.gs, I cannot see how its coat would stop it performing, However i was not struck on its coat

Is that showline or workingline?

No way it could be showline. It would never get past the Standard police.Plus if you tie some copper to it and stake it the groung it could double as a lightning rod. (Working wire lines) |
My guess was workingline but there are showlines look good and are built correctly and work well too.
I'd like to see how this wire-coated dog works. Does anyone have video? |

I offer this just as some trivia, but I seem to recall that in the beginning of the GSD breed the wire-coated dog (and the rough-coated as well as the smooth-coated) was recognized and allowed. If memory serves correctly the wire-coated dog was one of the first determined to have a "fault" and removed from the standard and I believe this action preceeded the removal of white coats from the breed standard.
Of course one occassionally sees the lasting evidence of the wire coat on the occassional dog-usually in the area just below the withers.Corinna, I am sorry to hear about the passing of your dog, but it is really neat that he is represented in this way. Unique, to say the least.

"Zauber" was from working lines. His wire image has very strong nerves. Nothing fazes this guy. |

Thanks Bob-O. It is neat to have him in wire. I would rather have the real dog back but this is fun.
As an aside -These boards are the greatest. Shepherd people have the best sense of humour as reflected in above posts.

Sorry Corinna,
I missed the post about the wire dog being modeled after you now deceased dog. Makes my comments seem insensitive reading back through this. |

Hey, no worries, I have thick skin (or is it a thick coat ?) |

Corinna - share a pic of Zauber, please. |

This is the coolest! Could you imagine a bad guy, sneaking up on a house at night finding a bush shaped like a GSD, maybe several, & just settling his nerves only to find the real thing? Sounds like it could be a scene from a 'Naked Gun" movie! LOL! jh |

Hey MVF, I will gladly share a picture of Zauber. I will put one up this weekend. Most of the pis I have of him are pre-digital camera age so I gotta scan one first, if I can get that thing to work.
Kalibeck, We have a wire donkey in our front yard and all the neighbourhood dogs think it is some kind of weird creature and bark their heads off as they walk by. My neighbours always complain that they get dragged half way across our yard when their dogs want to check it out. LOL. It is too funny to watch. |

Here is a picture of Zauber "the model" for the wire frame. This was in his later years doing what he did best, being an awesome gentle dog with our daughter.
