i live in new york and heard that this guy is back in town. (long island) has anyone trained with him before? i hear he's pretty hard handed.training for protection and obediance. would you leave your dog with him for an 8 week course?

There is only a very short list of people that I would leave my dog with for any length of time for any reason. I'm just not the trusting sort........
For OB and protection I prefer to work directly with a trainer and get trained along with my dog. Is that an option for you? Either working with a club or with someone one on one?
Unless you have a long standing relationship with someone I just would not send my dog off for training.

GET A REFERENCE LIST FROM THIS PERSON,,,IF HE DOESNT HAVE ONE ...LOOK SOMEWHERE ELS,E,,,,,,;YOUR VET CAN HELP , SURELY THEIR IS A SCHUZ CLUB NEAR YOU AND THEY WILL RECOMMEND TRAINERS....A LOT OF TRAINERS ARE IN SCHUTZ CLUBS AND TRAIN PRIVATELY ON THE SIDE.......
i DONT HAVE THE NOV , DEC SCHUTZ MAGAZINE HERE , YET ,TO SEE THE CURRENT LIST...SOMEONE ELSE CAN GIVE YOU A HEADS UP ON THE LOCAL CLUB NEAREST YU......

i am just looking for opinions on him.
he's been around for longtime. and i've heard good and bad.
leaving my dog i doubt that will be happening.
but then why are so many americans so earger to put there dogs on a plane to germany and title them.
without ever seeing what is going on.
Laziiness?
just to have a titled to dog to breed to make money.
if the closest club is 5 hours away then guess what,i have a life and i guess training is out for me..it is not a priority, UNLESS you need to title to make that money on the pups out of titled parents.
atleast this guy i can show up unexpected and see what is going on.

YR-Since I was the only one that had responded when you posted I assume that you all in caps post was directed at me. I take exception to your inference that I was putting someone down that is unable to train their own dog.
I stated that unless I had a long standing relationship with someone I would not leave my dog with that person and I do believe that that statement did in part answer the op questions. You may feel comforable going by a reference list but I am not. I have yet to see anyone put a client on a reference list that was unhappy with them.
You do not need the current magazine, all clubs are listed on the websites for USA, DVG, and WDA.
Back to the original poster, I am unable to give an opinion on Mr. Donavon. I only know what I have seen posted about him/by him on the internet and and internet search on his name should give you the same information. If you haven't done a search you may find some of the information educational.

I train privately and in a club enviroment, several different clubs as a matter of fact and I can count on one hand the amount of people that I have trained with that have trialed in Europe or has relatives that trial there. My experience is no where near half the Amercian club members that you stated. Did I misunderstand your post?
And personally while hearsay may not be accepted in a court of law it is certainly something I would consider when sending my dogs to someone for training...........

Does seem like we are posting at the same time, thanks for the explanation. For the life of me I could not see where my post was critical of anyones training methods.
Don't need to look up the thread, I'm sure I have seen the arguements pro and con argued dozens of times!

i know donovan from psa sport in FL. very good trainer & person hes a little hard on the dogs but he can bring out the best in them if they are not to soft good man from what i know about him |

If he met the dog and said he could do the job. Than I would trust him to do it. So Yes I would leave my dog with him

There are least 3 very good schutzhund clubs on Long Island, and certainly not a very long drive. You can go on the Schutzhund USA website and get their contact info. I would recommend checking out a couple of these clubs. FWIW |

He has been around for along time now. There is always going to be good and bad things said about anything and anybody that has any amount of exposure. Everybody has an opinion. Go around to different trainers clubs and talk to the people within the club and then ask the trainers questions. Find out why these people go to these trainers and if they are achieving there goals.
I train here on Long Island myself, most personal and executive protection. I have worked with people geared towards sport work as well, and my training might not be for everyone. I always have an open door policy so you can see what we are all about. I don’t hide anything. I also don’t need to tie up your money for a cluster of classes i charge per diem. If you want results you dedicate the time. As with anything in life you get out what you put into it.

| i have had my frech mastiff trained by dominic donovan and
he did a fantastic job, i have never left my dog with him but as a
trainer for me he is one of the best that i have come across |
