Chlorinated water ----A no no??? (15 replies)

http://www.cyberpet.com/cyberdog/articles/health/chlrh2o.htm
I have known for years how dangerous chlorine is and how it can effect people and here is an article that lays claim to the same info I felt was real and a lot of our dogs allergies and skin problems can come from the use of city water that contains high chlorine levels....One poster recently talked about her dog swimming in their pool and how much he loved it...
I did tell her ,,not a good idea...
Chlorox is actually listed in reality as an "insecticide" and we clean our floors and kitchens with it and our bathrooms and use our bare hands with comet and many household products....I read threads where people clean their kennel concrete floors with clorox solutions......
IMO use your own feeling and judgements on this...Thought everyone would like to read this.....found it late or early this am.....looking actually for something else and stumbled on this... |

We are on city water with a high chlorine content, something that has happened in the last few years, We tr to let the dogs water sit so it can disipate prior to their drinking. We have talaked about getting a water filtration system too. |

I have a friend with Poodles and he only gives his dogs distilled water. Claims it helps the coat and less tearing. |

I'm suprised there aren't much bigger problems. There is a reason that Chlorine can kill about any living thing known to man, yet we add it to our drinking water. I'm sure added with the industrial waste Flouride they add with it helps too. |

May be a little off topic, but always remember when traveling, to bring either water from the source that your dog drinks from or bottled water. Introducing new sources of water when traveling cross country can cause stomach problems for many dogs. |

Sorry this is so long but it's an alternative and much safer.
This was written by! Becky Ransey of Indiana (a doctor's wife), and I want
to share it with you. She was over recently for coffee and smelled the
bleach I was using to clean my toilet and counter tops. This is what she
told me.. I would like to tell you of the benefits of that plain little ole
bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at any drug store. What
does bleach cost? My husband has been in the medical field for over 36
years, and most doctors don't tell you about peroxide. Have you ever smelled
bleach in a doctor's office? NO!!! Why? Because it smells, and it is not
healthy! Ask the nurses who work in the doctor's ! offices , and ask them if
they use bleach at home. They are wiser and know better!
Did you also know bleach was invented in the late 40's? It's chlorine,
Folks! And it was used to kill our troops. Peroxide was invented during WWI
in the 20's. It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops
and hospitals. Please think about this.
1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and
hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. (I do it when I
bathe.) No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without
expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash.
2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of
germs.
3. Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave
a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray
it on the counters.
4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill
salmonella and other bacteria.
5. I had fungus on my feet for years until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of
peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry.
6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes
several times a day. My husband has seen gangrene that would not heal with
any medicine but was healed by soaking in peroxide.
7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep
it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like
bleach or most other disinfectants will.
8. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture
whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill the
bacteria. Hold for a few minutes, and then blow your nose into a tissue.
9. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away,
put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes
several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly.
10. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50
solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not
have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but more
natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, faddish, or dirty blonde.
It also lightens gradually, so it's not a drastic change.
11. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus, or
other skin infections.
12. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites
in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour it
directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse
with cold water . Repeat if necessary.
13. I use peroxide to clean my mirrors. There is no |

IMHO: hogwash.
I was wondering if someone would bring up floridation in connection with this. More hogwash.
Comparing even the Cl in pools to drinking water is ridiculous, much less bleach. Concentrations of various things can either kill you or help you or do nothing; it matters not what it is, but the concentration. It's obvious levels such as typically used on city water are perfectly fine. Bleach obviously is not particularly safe - they even say so on the labels!
If this were true, my old GS would've been the same wreck my current GS is (always city water, in the same place, from 2 mos age). Far from it. And she was splashed alot more from our pool, as well (much more pool activity then, from which she wanted to protect everyone).
Actually, my wreck of a dog came from the hinterlands where there is only well and some septic water - and she was a mess from the get-go. My old GS from city water, and she was healthy and robust as could be, with only minor seasonal allergies. |

Allergies wonder why?
Dry skin, rashes,,,dry hair, you name chlorine of any content is not good for humans or pets....the immediate notice may not show ,,,its what the absorption of it over a long period does,,,just like second hand smoke, but people that smoke , deny that ,,,,anyone can deny the obvious...and will till the end of time...
Allergies are caused by introduction into the system of something and not always the obvious....rashes on dogs washed with city water ,,,and then the addition of Advantage or Frontling Plus and guess what .....take both away wash dog in the ocean or lake with a non soap shampoo.....dog clear up for hundreds of year dogs didnt have advantage and frontline plus they lived fine...find a way to prevent bugs with natural things not chemicals..... |

I live in flea heaven and my dogs have non and I havn't used Frontline in a long time. With what I have been reading, I'm giving up heartworm meds too, causes more issues than it solves. When I started the RAW diet I thought allot of what I heard was hype. I just wanted my dog to eat the best and sick of changing kibble with the dog food tainting scare but really when your dog is just healthy, fleas don't hang out on them, they don't stink or have bad breath, allergies go away and their ears do stay clean.
Try reading The Nature of Animal Healing by Martin Goldstein D.V.M. He also recomends filtered or distilled water for pets.
You can only close your eyes to the truth so long. The buildup of all these chemicals is doing no one any favors, not us or our pets. |

Yes, people and dogs are dying in the streets because of all the Cl (and F) in water. Please.
Whose eyes are closed? Who wants to believe the snake-oil peddlers ("natural" - hemlock and snake venom are natural, just remember that) that make money off no research? |

ahh, links from a non biased source, excellent. A little read up on Stephen Barret, the unlicensed, non-practicing psych Dr, that is an expert on everything. Talk about a snake oil peddler. |

Cities do a great job of delivering your h2o without bacteria. They pump them with all of the chemicals listed above. The water arrives at your house with the maximum amount of chemicals allowed to consume. Nice! They do a good job with the amount of money they have available. Remember, most of the water used in your house is for showers, cleaning, sprinklers, and flushing. If they were to purify the water, it would cost around $5 every time you flushed the toilet. Can you imagine what it would cost you to take a 15 minute shower?
It is pretty much impossible to put in a reverse osmosis system for a city. The more pure the water, the more acidic. Water that is run through a reverse osmosis system would eat through copper pipes over time. That is why they are ran through plastic tubes to your fridge and sink. There have been a few cities to try this and they have gone bad. One was in the midwest and shortly after installing the system there were leaks everywhere. In some cities, there are pipes that are so old that they are still oak. It is sometimes very hard to change them out because roads have been built over them. Some pipes are so old and eroded, that the only thing the H2O travels through is the calcium and lime build-up. Most of them would crumble if you tried to dig them up and repair.
The best thing to do, whether you have city or well water, is to get yourself a reputable reverse osmosis system for cooking and drinking. If you are on a well, you should have your water tested. With well water, you have to worry about bacterias, nitrates, and arsenic. Believe it or not, but aquafers travel for many miles under the earth. That means that there are most definitely farms, factories, dumps, and septic systems in the area. |

amen on the reverse osmosis. I can see a need for the Cl-, to a degree, i've been in places that if I turn the shower on and walk out for a minute and then back, my eyes start to burn like i'm in a pool. I see the need, up to a point, but that doesn't mean I think its good for us. I see ZERO need to be paying industry for their industrial waste grade Fl- waste and dumping them in our water supply. |
