Received a letter form AKC saying they were putting my dog's papers on hold because someone had sent in littermate's dna to only find out, sire on papers is not the correct sire. I send in DNA for this young dog waiting for results. This particular breeder, after doing some research has repeatedly bred Mother to son, and Father to daughter. I know how I feel about this, but what do you think?

Total misrepresentation and dishonesty and I am surprised AKC is even registering the litter at all. And AKC won't say anything about the mother son or father daughter breedings. It's just money in their pocket. Very sad state of affairs indeed. Good luck to you, Nan

I can tell you what I think: It's fraud, plain and simple, and I'd be very angry...

As long as close inbreeding is allowed within AKC you can't do much about that part, and the breeder in question for sure will tell AKC he didn't know the bitch was bred "by accident" by another male ( that's the international standard response: "I didn't know - but I know she was bred by the official sire ...").
Hard to proof the truth, easy to lie as long as it's not mandatory to DNA every single pup.

I hope you like your dog, it's not his fault. My first own GSD was the result of a brother/sister mating ( by accident ) - a very good female.

In your case ( given that the DNA test comes back with " wrong father" ) I'd try to get as much as possible of my money back.

Off topic - for Nan: AKC is a registry only for ALL breeds; it would be up to the GSD clubs in the States to make their own rules...
I guess the ASL population in the States is bigger than 95% of the whole GSD population, I don't await any change.

That is what BYB do, unfortunately.
How much research did you do before buying?

by Nans gsd on 05 April 2018 - 19:04

Now that AKC is aware of this breeders blunders; the breeder can get suspended for life for lying and misrepresentation. Unable to EVER register another one of their litters. Huh, that would serve justice wouldn't it...AKC has that power. Their rules, they make the rules for all of us to abide by. You don't and get caught you pay the fines and suspensions, etc...Nan

Nan, I don't want to disappoint you, but as long as the official stud owner will testify that his stud bred the bitch the breeder will only get a "no, no, why didn't you take better care...".
Let's hope the breeder isn't the official stud owner, too.
Because of these problems SV established the mandatory DNA test - never trust humans...

Ragnarok, this is not a problem of backyard breeders but of breeders who think they are better and smarter than the rest of the circuit.

BYB will do what they can get away with is all I'm saying. They would have less of an audience if buyers did their research.

@ Ragnarok, there are, as Susie says, all sorts of breeders, not just BackYard ones, who will puIl scams if they think they can get away with it. Do we not see enough cases of careless or crooked behaviour of one sort or another coming here to PDB ?
That's why I tend to agree with your 2nd statement. But I am sometimes reluctant to point out that buyers should do advance research, because some people have such sensibility levels that it gets called 'rude' and 'insulting' to tell the plain truth ...
