Way back when I really liked the dog Timo v Berkasten. Sorry if spelled wrong.
Don’t see dogs like this anymore.
I know the German Judges do not care for the Sable dog.
Any breeders breed dogs like Timo out there anymore or has the Timo line died out?
Just wondering.

Timo:http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=20964-timo-vom-berrekasten

You can find dogs that are descended from him by using the reverse linebreeding function on the database, and there are PLENTY of them!

Not only are there plenty of offspring - despite the apparent preference for black&gold dogs - but there are even more than you can see on PDB. Don't forget it isn't a complete registry. Many e.g. British dogs descended from Timo but were never recorded here because of the greater N American usage of the website.

And, of course, not all his progeny were sables like him. My mentor saw him in the flesh in Germany once and said she wasn't particularly impressed with his colouration, from a distance he looked like a black & white dog; it was only as you got closer you realised he was sable. Nonetheless he was a good specimen in many ways, and clearly not that unpopular as a sire in his native land after his VA placings.

Even though some breeders and judges remain (perhaps ignorantly ?) unconvinced about sables, the breed still has many nice sable animals, in all its diverse sections. Probably at about the same proportion as has existed for decades, since grey dogs fell out of favour in the 1940s. Many of them a much better 'grey' than Timo.

If you are interested in sables generally you could do worse than study the output of the Von Arlett kennel; there is one hugely successful and respected German breeder - and judge - who positively likes sables !

Progeny from Timo, initially had stronger temperament than the average Black and red specimen( show) of that period, but unfortunately the assimilation of his stock back into the typical Black and red lines do not reflect that any longer.

Gustav is right Dawn, there are a heck of a lot of other things about good dogs to look for, other than colour. Think its probable that most of the breeders who used Timo will have been Showlines people, so unless you particularly want that, and if you wanted more working strength in the temperament, for instance, odds are that you would need to expand your horizons anyway. And the further away in generations you get from the dog you like the look of, the more that dog's 'plus points' get watered down - and we are now, what, about 4 generations of breeding on from Timo ?

Plenty of really nice sables being bred on the Working Lines side, too.

Thanks for the comments.
This isn’t my first rodeo owning a German Shepherd, and color DOES NOT make the dog. I just liked Timo for his work ethic, and not as a beauty pageant dog.

Dawn

P.S. I know there are nice Sable Working Lines as I own one.
