Hello,
A bitch owner contacted me in regards to a mating with my dog. Both german shepherds are excellent (health, character...) but the bitch did not let my dog mount her correctly.
They were both loose without leashes under our supervision. It is the 1st time for both dogs (and both owners :P), my dog is 3 and a half years and the bitch is 5 years old. They were very playful at first but as soon as my dog tried to mount her she snapped growled and even bit him 3 times. The last one was a bit nasty so I had to stop whole process.
The owner of the bitch says that it is the 8th day after she got her period and that the biting is part of the thing! I do not buy that and will not let my dog get hurt.
My dog also didn't know much of what he was doing and when we tried to help, the bitch would break off from the dog and tries to bite him.
The owner of the bitch is coming at my house in 2 days to try again, do you have any advice?

Sounds like she was too early in her cycle at 8 days, so ten days onward is more like it.

Advice....leave the male to figure it out, don't try to 'help' him...your attempts will most likely hinder him.

Muzzle the female, put a leash on her but no leash on him. Only prompt if he is on the wrong end, but by moving the female into position, not the male.
Steady her by standing directly in front of her face so as not t interfere with him. If she fights by sitting down or violently jumping away from him, she's probly not 'ready'.

Don't over work the male...after ten or fifteen minutes without success, separate them and try the next day.

Joanro gave excellent advice including muzzle the female and perhaps let her get used to the muzzle some if shes working too hard to try to get it off the average female ready in the 10 to 15 day range and alot of females will flag, flirt , or stand steady when they are close to being ready dont forget some females cant tie no matter what day they are on in the cycle and some you can try an A.I buts thats no guanatee of success either. In case you do get a tie support and hold the female so she wont damage the male

A bitch should stand for a male if not I would not do the breeding.

go ahead with AI instead, collected fresh and you don't have to worry.

Das holz: 'A bitch should stand for a male if not I would not do the breeding.'

If she isn't ready to be bred, you sure won't do the breeding, you can't 'force' a male to breed a bitch.....which brings us to this.....

'go ahead with AI instead, collected fresh and you don't have to worry.'

If this eggs are not ripe, it won't matter if you AI or not AI, the results will be the same....empty.

If a dog is not 'capable' of breeding naturally, so you resort AI from him, you are passing his lousie genetics to the next generation.

As for '...don't have to worry.'. I ask; 'Worry' about what?

My females will 'test' a male dog before she will 'allow' him to sire her puppies....if he doesn't have the power and drive to overcome resistance, then he will not get to sire her litter. I certainly would never resort to artificial means to produce a litter from a weak male.

Were Progesterone tests done ? No offense to the poster but it appears that , based on what you wrote , that neither you or the female's owner are ready to contemplate breeding . Much less the dogs. Again , this is not meant in a mean or malicious way :(
