I really enjoyed that video. Please put more video's up when you transition to more pressure increasing the speed of the recall. Great clip Thanks a lot

The puppy would have "turned" without the stim. No need for "shock collar" training especially at this age. I would never do it. Just one more gadget that is unnecessary. But to each their own, as long as they don't switch to e-stim too early, no harm done.

The puppy was turning before she hit it look at the turn versus sound lol Let a pup be a pup and not put to much on them let it be the natural dog it is with the intelligence to train without vibes and noises. The puppy would have aced this excersize without the gadget IMO

GSD Newbie Agree. Can't personally see the fascination with e collar training, esp a pup this age. I think it's bonkers. If it were a deaf pup, then use a vibrating collar for sure, but no need for an e collar. Lief, you pretty much seem to train anything with an e collar. Have you got shares in an e collar manufacturing biz LOL?

i cant click the video for soem reason but putting a shock collar on a puppy is sick id never do that (if the pup actually recieves a shock)
by poison on 26 January 2011 - 19:20 |
the collar just vibrates and doesnt hurt the pup? clicker training sounds a lot better

I also do not feel that a shock collar should be used on an 11 week old pup. Someone else on here mentioned the clicker, I feel that would be a much better way of training. Also the pup is being called before the buzzer goes off on the ecollar. From what you explained on the video before you showed the exercise... the timing is off so therefore the pup is not being taught correctly, as per the video. Just my .02 cents FWIW

What a bunch of bull that is stated as reason to use a pager function. Lief, and you call yourself a trainer? Really good one you are.

The point of the video was not to shock the pup but to introduce the collar. E stimulation is not a punishment nor is it harsh if used correctly. no difference in using a long collar and pulling the dog to you to teach a recal. it's all just pressure. I've seen e stimulation introduced at an early age with very positive results. I know of many PPD trainers who refuse to use any food reward and very limited amount of toys. Even puppies are taught everything through pressure stimulation. Lifting the collar to out, lifting the collar to teach sit are all types of pressure training. Personally I use food, pressure positive and negative reinforcement. But the end result is what I care about. Stop being so closed minded. Pressure is not punishment

I didn't watch the video but my thoughts are why? My male was taught only by praise no food/treats. Yes, we can "to each their own", but at 11 weeks? Could the outcome or desired results not be accomplished just by voice? Even the simple "double pat" on the side of leg? Is this an experiement of sorts? A new technique/method? What I don't like at times is when an OP puts something out there, i.e.; video, statement, thoughts knowing that there will be responses or that it will be a "hot topic" but then doesn't comment, respond, interact, interject, defend, explain....................... Rhino skin!

I use pressure to in many forms (and find it very valuable) but at 11 weeks? The puppy really won't come fast unless there is pressure either from a collar or long line? Right now I am training a little puppy who doesn't even wear a leash during obedience training let alone needing to be "reeled" in on a long line or have a low level stim in order to do a recall. The puppy should WANT to come back. Right now to train a recall the dog must be restrained by someone else, or I throw food to get him to move AWAY from me so I can call him back.
