Looking for a few 'puppy raisers' that live in the Asheville-Black Mountain-Hendersonville-Canton-Brevard, NC (and possibly upstate SC and East TN) areas to 'foster' a 13-14 week old German shepherd puppy until it can be fully evaluated as a working prospect (similar to the service dog puppy program).

We will provide food and necessary Vet care while you have the puppy; however, we cannot be held responsible for any damages, etc. caused by the puppy while it is in your care. When you take a puppy into your home, you are acknowledging that said puppy could have an accident on the floor, or chew a table leg, or mistake your child's toys for its own, etc. ;-)

Requirements of a Puppy Raiser:

1. The puppy must not be kept predominantly kenneled or tethered outdoors; it must be raised inside as a house dog/family pet.

2. You must be willing and able to take on some training activities with the puppy, including crate/house training, basic obedience, and attending weekly training with the Asheville Schutzhund Club, which meets in Hendersonville (or an approved club near you).

3. You must be willing and able to continue the puppy's socialization and 'worldly exposure' to new people, places, and things.

4. You must be willing and able to keep the puppy for a minimum of 6 weeks, but should be aware that you could have the puppy for several months.

Puppy raisers WILL BE compensated after the puppy is evaluated and placed. Please e-mail walnussbach at gmail.com for more information.

I'm out of consideration, 'cause I live in Pa, & I don't have room/time for a puppy right now, but I have a question. What happens when the 'puppy raiser' doesn't want to return the puppy? Is there an option for them to purchase the pup? Just curious. jackie harris

Of course, the puppy raiser would have the option of purchasing the pup if they so desired. :-)

I'm not in your area but you should normally expect to pay someone to board and imprint your puppies.  I understand that you did mention compensation but you really want experienced trainers doing this and they usually set their price.

Thank you for your input, Keith, but boarding and imprinting is not exactly what this is all about. If it were, I would send them all to one of the trainers I know that do that. Actually one of them is who suggested to me that I do this. :-)

Oh, I think the idea has potential if you can find the right people but I also see the potential for someone ruining an otherwise nice dog if you don't.  I'm not sure how much screening would be enough to satisfy me.

I understand that completely, Keith, and that is a very good point. I wouldn't let them go to just anyone. ;-)

Joanro, did you have a question?
