7 month old SL diagnosed with an ulcer.. any by swingfield on 29 May 2012 - 18:49 |
Show line female.. (Piek daughter) 7 months old.. she got to the US in Feb, I got her 4 weeks ago.. seemed skinny and not much fat on her bones.. Changed her diet.. she is on a mix of Eukanuba and Orijens large breed puppy.. has had on and off squirts and solid stools.. Pancur for 3 days.. stool sample is negative.. ok..Vet visit today.. one more stool sample indicated old intestine blood.. Which the vet said it most likely is an ulcer.. so Dr put her on Amoxi (of course to get any possible infection) Pepcid AC..(for the life of me I can come up with the generic name) 20 mgs a day.. and then the Forti-Flora for 14 days.. am I missing anything?? I work for the vet but tend to get "tunnel vision" when its my own dog and I tend to overthink things horribly.. (ADHD)!! haha... Thanks for any suggestions! She has gained 5 lbs since I got her.. and am proud of that..She is a happy healthy girl that has no demands.. just a house dog living the dream.. she just doesnt have the 'meat' on her bones I would like to see!! I am not in a postion to dedicate a complete 'raw' diet that some people swear by and the diet I feed, have most of my Shepherds living happy and healthy till at least 12 years of age.. so I feel comfortable with that.. Any ulcer experience and what will help her to digest and gain at the same time would be great !! thanks all..Sherry Update..what is the difference in "omerprazole" and "famotodine" in dogs? one bette than the other?

Basically it is the call name for the brand it runs under Prilosec is the first on Omerprazole...and it was recalled for several reasons...supposidly the side effects are not good..I take it...not all the time.. this one is for reflux and severe acid cut back. I started taking Prevacid now Famatodine is Pepcid Ad....it is milder I think more for ulcers.. Yr

Wonder what causes an ulcer in that young a puppy? Different for sure..my first time to know about this..maybe we have ulcers and do not know it. I often say when mine eat grass they want to throw up and may have indigestion.. I will give them a rolaid sometimes. I know I take magnesium , calcium and several other vitamins because I do take Prevacid or prilosec and I know it causes a depletion of the magnesium or calcium Always something.. I have produced mega acid for 50 years . MY gold rings use to turn green on my fingers My jeweler told me to eat Rolaids and my Dr . told me to eat rolaids when I was preg.. He said he would rather me eat rolaids than to have acid.. So I do but now I use prevacid..or Prilosec. I do try to eat a more Akaline diet..it works but nothing I like is akaline..lol at least not totally . Veggies and fruits are akaline but I love all the other acidic things..toooooo YR

Omerprazole is the generic name for Prilosec. Famotodine is the generic name for Mylanta/Pepsid AC. Both decrease the production of stomach acid. Something to check into is duralactin/microlactin (http://canineinflammation.com/microlactin/) which helps with arthritis because is blocks inflammation. This forum discusses how it has helped their dogs with IBS: http://itchmoforums.com/write-a-pet-product-review/duralactinmicrolactin-t8379.0.html . I recently bought microlactin (human form) for my son who has ulcerative colitis because his condition, like arthritis, has to do with inflammation. I'm hoping it will help him. Best of luck.

haha.. Rolaids are the 'cure all' !! that is funny.. I live on Pepto myself!! ok.. She has been having on and off soft cow patty.. then firm, then explosive.. I changed her food from Royal Canin .. to what I was feeding everyone else.. ! Her stools stayed the same and then started to stink to high heaven.. it wasnt Parvo stink.. but death stink!! Since I just got her.. I thought well lets just get a good exam.. Dr did a direct smear and a float.. and said there was intestine blood present.. indicating the possibility of a stomach ulcer! I know we treat all of our show horses with ulcer guard and asked about it.. they do make it for dogs but its 3 times the cost.. so over the counter Pepcid AC is the same thing.. I guess we will try this for 30 days along with the flora crap powder for a week.. I thought yogurt was good too... so I wondered if anyone else has had this same diagnosis with any of their dogs.. I thought ok.. she just flew on a plane from Germany.. then a new home with new dogs.. then another plane flight.. new home new dogs.. maybe she is just a soft constition type dog!! Better breed her to a tough bad ass male then!! LOL do the mag pills upset your tummy at all?? I only take Potassium for leg cramps at night.. my rings turn green too.. told my hubby it was fake gold ! Was told my the jeweler that it was an iron deficiency!!?? your my hero.. I hate veggies !!
