I had to shut the dog in the porch as we had visitors with young children and the adults were frightened of him.  I didn't want him near the fear so shut him in there for around 30 minutes.  I mean, it is a fair size room with back door and windows and he could hear us!  When I let him out, he had gnawed a little bit on the corner of the wall, leaving some plasterboard dust on the floor.  He has never done this before so obviously didn't take well to being closed out!  I pointed at the mess on the floor and said sternly " Who did that, what are you doing!"   He was immediately downcast and looked everwhere but at the floor, the wall or me.  The same thing happened about a week later but he hadn't left a scrap of plasterboard dust anywhere - he had swallowed the lot!
I got the message!!

I would teach him a bomb proof down stay so that when your visitors come, you put him in a down in his area so that he can be
part of the goings on and your visitors can feel secure. GSD, as your boy told you, do not like being excluded from the pack.
Either teach him this or put him in a crate where he can still be part of the action.
