I am doing a little research about training groups in Portland area in Oregon. SAR group, good obedience classes? Suggestions for trainers? People looking are new to the working dog so they will need a guidance. They purchase a puppy with her being a companion dog but they would like to try to find something to do with her, maybe even do more than just petco OB classes.

They asked me about scent work and maybe little protection training if she can do it. Of course the OB part goes along. I suggested maybe SAR work but they need to make the decision.

thank you

I am not sure about training groups in Portland (despite living there myself), but if they are willing to make the 1 - 2 hour drive to Salem, they can look into

Oregon K-9 Search Teams
http://www.ok9st.org/ok9st/

for Search And Rescue. I do not have any personal experiences with or knowledge of OK9ST myself, but my dog's littermate and his owner/handler volunteers with them.

For protection training, Schutzhund, and general obedience

Pet Village

also in Salem, Oregon. That is where we went for puppy classes and basic obedience. I would recommend they sit in during a class first if they are interested, the trainers are accustomed to working with hard tempered, strong willed working bred dogs and use a solid mixture of positive reinforcement and positive punishment training methods with the prong. Nothing overboard, I was comfortable there with my pup and would go back, they do not pressure any person or dog into anything. Knowledgeable people, really "know" their dogs. I definitely would turn to them for teaching control over and handling of harder tempered, strong willed dogs (as opposed to low confidence, extremely soft, and/or shy dogs). Just my opinion and experience, of course.

If you're interested in scent work look into North West Truffle Dogs just across the Columbia, in Vancouver. http://www.nwtruffledogs.com/

Across the river in BattleGround,WA is Allgemeiner Hundesport klub. They are great people and have been in the schutzhund world for years. I highly reccomend them!
