I had a male that used to do this, either lean against my leg or put his paw on my foot.  i have always believed its for reassurance, he would only do it in a situation where he wasn't quite sure how things were about to turn out.

I would say it is about dominance. Dog is trying to "feel" if he/she can push you away or is stronger than you.

Do you mean like sitting back against you, on your foot? Does she put a lot of weight against you? Maybe not in your case, but some dogs do this to claim you.  .  Like the Pit Bull I worked with yesterday would do this, and if one of the other dogs came up to the owner, the Pit would growl.  He was sitting on her feet, with his back against her legs, putting a lot of weight against her.  I've seen quite a few dogs do that.

And a side note, Ambii, is that the same black GSD that was in previous avatar pics of yours? WOW!  That dog looks great.

I have several dogs of very strong character who do this: right front foot squarely on top of my left foot putting a lot of weight on it. I read it as possessiveness. They own me and we are connected!

I think it all starts by asking a dog to do something that is not natural for a dog to do. I have never seen a dog naturally walk so close to you he rubs your leg while walking and turning his head up looking at you. It is a trained action to score points only. Training for foot placement and square positioning is a part of that training. If that is what floats your boat you will have to correct it. I don't think it has anything to do with confidence level either way, but only he hasn't learned for sure what you expect from him.

desert dog what in the world are you talking about? We're talking about a dog claiming someone, nothing to do with training for a trial.....

relax, the op said dog would put it's right foot on his left foot. nothing about claiming or showing dominance. My answer is based upon a dog doing this while sitting from a heal. They do it alot until corrected. If you took the op to mean something different, I did not see in the op anything about claiming something or someone. I know you are a good person but if you want to see who can piss highest on the post, pick someone else

Hey Hank, I'm not in a pissing contest but I have dogs who do that just for the hell of it and it ain't got nuthin' to do with points or lookin' up at me while heeling. They just like to see how hard they can mash my foot before I move it. Then they look at me like why'd you do that? Plus the OP asked WHY his dog does it. Every body could relate to it and gave their comment. So I guess you get to piss up the tree by yourself.

desert dog, When did they say the dog was doing this during a heel?  They could very well mean it either way......from what myself and others mentioned with a dog sitting on your foot or feet, leaning back against you (claiming) or maybe sitting from a heel.  They just never mentioned anything about heeling....so I and others were only going on what was stated.  With that said, my "what in the world comment" was sarcasm.... Maybe not something that you could tell over a computer though, so I apologize for that.

I had the same problem, I knew it was a prank to make me fall because he also  liked to push me and he also used to brake in front of me. One day he made me fall and as soon he realized I was on the floor, he let the ball and returned running to me and he helped me to get up with his snout pushing to my back, I  exaggerated the pain to made him understand he could hurt me. So that he didn't  put his paw on my slipper any more.

I wouldn't say that my male that did this was in any way shape or form 'claiming me'  He was looking for approval that what he was about to do was allowed.  Quite possibly because I'd spent so much time teaching him that firing at people walking out of houses or streets infront of him, were NOT a threat and that is wasn't allowed.  He'd been trained with the police although not  apolice dog and came to me at 2 yrs old with very civil tendancies/handler protective tendancies.

The only times he did this was when he was 'asking me' if it was OK for him to protect me.

On a side note: GSDguy08 yep thats Evo in my Avatar pic (same dog as in last avatar pic he's the only shepherd I have now) Thank you :)
