My 30 month old female GSD was rated with mild HD in the right hip by OFA at 24 months. At 26 months she received a normal grade from OVC. She comes from a long line of show pedigree dogs. I started schutzhund training but realized the dog does not have that type of pedigree. Poor nerves, little drive in all areas, not what I expected. My question is should I pay my breeder to release the breeding rights now that OVC has passed her hips. It was the breeders idea to redue the Xrays and submit to OVC. Breeders please inform me as what your opinions are. I am very reluctant to even consider breeding this bitch. Am I wrong or is my breeder wrong.

Why would you breed a dog with poor nerves (if she really does have poor nerves), little drive, etc. even if she had excellent hips? This is soo bizarre. I will never understand why people think a dog with passable hips should be bred just because, and a dog w/iffy hips who might be fantastic in all other aspects is neutered because of. Your breeder sounds a bit daft.

I don't know what OVC is but this jumped right at me when you said "realized the dog does not have that type of pedigree. Poor nerves, little drive in all areas, not what I expected ". If I was on the market for a puppy I certainly would not buy one from "poor nerved" dam even if the hips were excellent. If it is not what you even expected then why would you even consider breeding her? Or am I not reading this correctly?

NOPE, I would not breed her.  With all in question, NO.  I am curious also, what is OVC??  Best of luck with her,  Nan

Simply looking at the hips--is there any sign of arthritis, calcification, or joint degeneration in the 30-month xrays?

As far as the breeding decision--if you have so much doubt that you who knows the dog best are not in your own heart certain that a dog should be bred, then the dog should not be bred.

I didn't really see the hips as the point of the post. I saw it as a breeding question, and regardless of hips, I wouldn't breed this dog. I have no doubt that the hips are probably fine...as I am certainly not a big fan of OFA.
