We are currently seeking to purchase a puppy with potential to be naturally protective and a possible personal proection dog in the future..what traits should we look for in a puppy that would make a suitable candidate? Thanks to all the knowledgeable breeders/trainers out there in advance!

its really hard going with a puppy maybe a year old dog and u will know what ur getting ?

kennels like eurosport, alpine k9, tinkerhook would be a good start to begin looking if you are looking

there is a poster on this board i dont know if she breeds but she seems to have really nice dogs gsdpack? i dont know maybe iam a newb but her puppys when working seem to be really good and looked like they would make good pp dogs (the older puppys) really nice dogs.  If she does not breed maybe she can help you at least whereever she got those pups from cause they look like they would make great protectors.

Whatever u do do not fall into a scam!

Ah, my dear waleed, who also breeds GSD's  for protection, ( or so he says on his website), yet, he  always jumps in on  these type of threads (like a duck on a junebug), with a negative comment.

I wonder why that is?

I  would probably look for a dog 8 months old and up. You will have a better idea that way, as to what the dog will be when he matures.

Fenrir, $2800-$5000 for a pup? But it does include shipping.

you might have got lucky? how can they know a pup is going to turn out so good and worth that much thats crazy. Imagine what they charge for the adults.

You can probably get just as good dogs or better from euro sport or jiri for much better price.

A green pp prospect should be id say personally 3-5k this is a dog that is 6months-1year already had some basic training in protection and testing to make sure it would be a good dog for this kind of work.  If the dog happen to have extra title or OB training be breed worthy or show worthy etc.. then the price goes up and up if it also is good enough to be a sport comp dog also then the price will go up

JMHO of course i spent about 6 months or so researching b4 i got my older puppy

I did not get lucky, the pedigrees are as good as they get that much can't really be argued. Granted a pup is always a crap shoot but they were able to give me exactly what I wanted and a dog that is simply amazing in every way. I am glad however that you too got what you were looking for, I spent over a year and a half looking for my dog before I decided on Kreative and only after many conversations with them. Their training team is one of the best in the country period. Either way I know that with the suggestiions made here the OP will have a lot of good options with great pedigrees and people who are breeding great German Shepherds. Good luck on your search!

http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/German_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=702242  This is my dog, I will be using her for sport but I plan to do private building searches and security with her as well. She has an insane prey drive and pretty serious side. Her pedigree is fantastic too and she is good looking pretty sure she will do great in conformation.

Fenrir, all of their pedigrees look fine, but I can find Pups with those pedigrees without paying those prices. For that price, I can buy 2-3 Pups and choose which one fits my needs.

Lisa, what do you want in the dog when it is fully mature? What is your idea of naturally protective?

Hi Lisa,

Finding a puppy for personal protection is very difficult. I suggest you find a young started dog, maybe 12 to 15 months. At this age, you can be sure that the pup will not have temperament or environmental or handler issues. It will have obedience training and also a good deal of protection training. The cost of getting an older pup are actually less if you consider the cost of raising a pup, getting hips and elbows checked, and pay for lessons and then protection training....

Protection dogs can be found starting at $4500 +shipping and up... sometimes they are a bit less but that's hard to find. The more training, the more expense. If you want a dog that does house searches and everything else can cost up to $30,000 depending on where you go to purchase.... Don't pay too much thinking that just becasue it costs more, its trained better..... this is not always the case.

Make sure you do some soul searching and decide exactly why you want this type of dog and exactly what training you want it to have.....

and realize that you will have to continue training to keep it's skills fresh.

Lisa,
Good luck with your search.  You have gotten some very good suggestions here on places to start looking.  I would look at GSDpack's litter and talk to her.  I would also say that Sportwaffen is very knowledgeable and has a great reputation.  If you deal with Eurosport deal with Taunya directly with her and not one of her "resellers, partners or vendors."

Be very wary of the people who PM you and try to sell you dogs. Do a lot of research and start by searching their name here and then google them and their kennel.  I would also check out the "rip off report."  Before deciding on any kennel get several references and contact them.  You really have to be careful and do your research, especially with some of the people you will meet on the internet.

FWIW,

Jim

Lisa,
Perhaps you could check out this ad for a pup that has the potential for PP or Schutzhund according to the ad?

Check out this thread on how to pick a breeder:

These links should help. It really does pay to do a little research.       I II
