Is this a long coat or a short coat by Kevlar on 05 December 2011 - 17:04 |
Is this a coated puppy or a stock coated puppy? He is one of ten in his litter and all his other litter mates are clearly stock coats. His parents are both stock plush coats (show lines). At 5 weeks his coat was much softer and finer than his litter mates. At 7 weeks (today) his coat is getting coarser but is still slightly softer than his litter mates. Fur on top of his head is still baby soft. He does have hair between this toes but no more than some of his stock coat litter mates. Any experts out there?? First picture is at 7 weeks, second photo is with his litter mates. he is on the left looking a different direction than everyone else, third picture he is on the far right, and forth picture is just of him, and fifth picture shows his toes.

I´m not really sure about it. How about long hairs behind the ears?

He appears to be a stockcoat, he does not have the head-shape of a longcoat as viewed from the photos.

Jeanette... thanks so much for the response. Just wondering what makes you 100% sure? I am trying to learn how to spot the difference. Any insight would be appreciated!!

As cute as he is you can send him to me and I will send photos back in a year to confirm if he is LSC or just a SC..... (Always willing to help out after all!) ;)

He is as sweet as he is cute!! For sure a keeper. Just wondering if there is going to be any potential to show. We 100% love him either way and didn't pay for a show quality dog but it might be fun. Our breeder was fairly certain he would be a stock coat but he wasn't 100% sure. We picked him for his personality (very mellow and loving).

Any one out there think he might be a long coat or is everyone ready to call him a stock coat? Thank you to everyone who already responded.

Hmmm, he is definitely fuzzier than the rest. I say he may be a LSC. If I was going to pick, he'd be my choice. :-)

I think there is a possibility he may be a long coat. As RS said, he is definitely fuzzier than his littermates.

He may be a short coat just a carrier for the long coat genes. I've noticed that a few dogs who carry the coated gene tend to be a little more plush coated then those that don't carry the gene.

But looking back at those pictures he seems to have the head of a long coat dog. You could always just get him tested that will settle any doubt. Hes handsome though

I think stock/plush coat. These pups do look fuzzier and cause a person to wonder about it for sure. At 7 weeks it usually shows much more of a coat than yours does for a long coat. Here are some pictures of a litter with 3 female pups of mine. Dam is short stock coat, sire is plush coat. they were 5 weeks old. pretty easy to tell then, but between 2 weeks and 5 weeks, I was questioning whether #3 pup was plush or long. The long coat continued to get more hair & softer feeling while the plush coat slowed down/stopped getting any longer/fuzzier. Hopefully these will help you. be sure to keep us posted how your pup turns out. it is a constant learning experience.. Weezy. ![]() ![]() ![]()

By the way Kevlar--Your pictures of the puppies are BEAUTIFUL! Good job!

Thanks Weesy!! You post is very helpful. The breeder I got him from did say that he was unsure if the female (his Mom) was going to be stock or coated until she blew her coat at 4 months. Here are pictures of Mom and Dad. I am thinking they are both plush coat (can you tell from the photos?) so it is possible he is a long coat or maybe just a longer plush coat. Will definitely update the post in a couple of months with more pictures. The first picture (on the left) is Mom and the 2nd picture (on the right) is Dad. Dad does look like a slightly longer hair stock coat. Is there such thing as a longer hair stock coat?![]() ![]() |

Males usually have a fuller coat than the females. I'd say both parents are stock coats. Mom doesn't look plush to me. I look forward to hearing how he develops. I have a LSC, and I think she is just beautiful. All the best with your pup!
