Brucellosis Tests for Stud Males, How Often? by SummertimeGSD on 24 November 2011 - 06:40 |
If you have a male that you offer for public stud, how often should you do a brucellosis test? I've heard some breeders say they test every 6 months as a precaution, and others not at all because the females coming to them have negative tests. Or if they're not being used often should they be tested prior to being used?

First of all, you must ask for test results from any female brought for mating. Yes, you have to do "bruce" test on your stud every 4-6 months provided you check the females you mate. I consider brucellosis the "satan" of any breeding programm; if not impossible, hard to cure, can stop any portential breeding programm, rapid spread/very infectious but silent as a shark attack.

Brucellosis can be acquired simply by sniffing the urine of an infected dog so stud males should be tested at least every 6 months. It isn't something that comes solely from breeding. Judy

Thanks. I'm amazed how many people think that testing is a waste of money. I know it's important, I just wasn't sure how often to test.

3 times a year is what our vet said if the dog was in "regular" use. If you only breed the dog once or twice a year then test prior to each breeding. Annette
