Puppy weight gain by SuziesZoo on 02 September 2011 - 05:05 |
Should I be concerned that my puppies are only gaining any where from 40 - 55 grams a day? I read that they should double their weight in the first week. I have not yet supplemented them. Mom has an unlimited supply of a quality grain free kibble and is given raw chicken 2x a day. I am worried that with 9 puppies she might not be producing enough milk to feed them all. Or I just may be an over protective worried grandmother :)

How do the puppies look? Do they seem satisfied?

If they are usually quiet, vigorous and plump I wouldn't worry especially if all of them gain approx same amount every day. Quiet, plump puppy means well fed puppy. If some puppies gain more weight than others – it usually means that they get more food from mom. I would supplement smaller pups only till they catch up with their bigger siblings.

Relax, Suzie. I have never weighed a puppy, never moved them around to nurse, never supplemented, and never had a problem w/large litters. More important even than food for mom is hydration. Make sure her food is extra wet or bait her water w/chicken broth or something if there's a concern that she may not have enough milk. Mine has never had any problem at all w/9-10pups.

Fast growing pups, extre suplementation, extra nutrition= higher probability of bad hips. Prager Hans
