Boxers, Airedales, and Briards are known to be worked in titled, but more in Europe than here (and here, only euro-lines). I know there are a handful of Aussies and border collies titled in Schh - one at least maybe two were competed at the same HOT Championship that the yellow lab Harry competed at (I was there too) - the lady lived in AZ I think? Not sure - and I think her BCs were rescues - they did a good job for 30 lb prey monsters. The most difficult part seemed to be in training when the sleeve was slipped, sleeve was just about as big as the dog, so carrying it was difficult. molly

My mixed breed from the pound (probably a Rottweiler mix) has a BH, OB1 and TR1. She started training at two years of age (approx). She earned High Tracking Score in Trial for her TR1. I was doing bite-work with her too and she just loves it - had some issues with the grip but our club helper and other members feel she could get a ScH1, though I won't be pursuing it for a number of reasons - physically, the obedience jump is very hard for her. I do plan on getting a TR2 on her this year or next.

There was a gal in the old San Francisco Schutzhund Club named Pat (can't remember her last name, darn it) who put SchH3's on her collies, and I saw Joe Tackett award a Golden Retreiver the SchH 3 at a club outside Chicago in the 80's once.

Vicki Bartley (TX) competed in the USA SCHH 3 NATIONALS with her Australian Shepherds. Martha (last name?) who used to train with Dean Calderon put SchH 3's on her Bouviers. I remember watching an Airdale get his title too. He competed in the 92 NW Regionals with a guy named Terry Germany right here in Sutter when we held it down the street at the high school the first time.

Certainly titled Bouviers are not unusual. There are many, many titled Bouviers, Giant Schnauzers, Dobermanns, Bulldogs, Pitbulls, Rotts, Boxers, Airedales, and other "odd" breeds, if you consider any breed that is not a "Shepherd type" an odd breed. The working breeds can work, if the handler knows the breed and how to train and handle them. The "odd" breeds to mention are the ones NOT well-suited for the sport of schutzhund, yet still titled. Labs, Goldens, border collies, aussies, cattle dogs, even some terriers (not including Airedales, who are actually not uncommon in Europe and even this country there are more than a handful of titled dogs of that breed) THOSE are the ones I think are quite unusual, and kudos to the handlers for putting those difficult titles on dogs who are not bred to do that sort of work. molly

I for one love to see other breeds doing ScH specially the small breeds because it is alien to them and it makes me smile to watch them having fun and they show a lot of courage for small dogs, However it is nothing great doing ScH at any time according to a couple of Guys on this site who have mailed me in the past to say that you should be able to train a Puppy from 8 weeks old to the BH by the time it is 6 months old and get it to pass its ScH1 by the time it is 9 to 10 months old that is Tracking, Obedience, and Protection if it was allowed but it should be capable of passing with decent scores across the three phazes at those ages. I think that is great when they do that very clever handlers and they must be making a good living training other peoples dogs to do that they are far more clever handlers than i am for sure Steve1

I'm kinda new to the sport I guess. I don't know of a single dog that was ever even close to ready for a SchH 1 at under one year old. Why on earth would anyone want to push a pup that hard is beyond me.

Isn't there an age limit? I thought the minimum age for allowing a dog to title in BH was 15 months, and minimum age for ScH1 was 18 months.

Ron Johnson had a magnificent Cane Corso, Legend of an Outlaw, aka Waylon, who earned SchH2 and trained with Ron Weiss of Greater Lakes Working Dog Club. He was also AD, V and CGC and a wonderful, wonderful dog. Brandon Wilson had an African Boerboel who was SchH3, IPO3, AWD3, FH1 and trained with O G Indianapolis with Mike Diehl and Cedar Hill with Jeff Lund. Did not get the pleasure of meeting him but hear he was super too. Barb

I have recently started training at another club and there is a Bernese Mountain Dog there. Haven't seen her work yet (only been to two sessions thus far) but am excited to see her in action.
