Mating and gestation by zobelhund on 01 May 2011 - 23:37 |
Hello all, Two questions: First is how many times do you allow mating to occur? We mated 4 times, locked. Second question is day 14 into heat cycle they bred first time. They bred again day 15. Then again day 17 and 18. Gestation is around 62-64 days. When should I count from? First mating or 4th mating? Thank you!

did you do progesterone testing? count 63 days from ovulation, regardless of then the bitch was bred.

gestation is 62-64 days from ovulation irrespective of date of fertilization eggs are viable to fertilization 2 to 4-5 days after ovulation. If you do not know the date of ovulation (have not done progesterone tests), apparent gestation period can be 57-70 days, as sperm can live for 6-8 days easily. A bitch can ovulate 6 days after the last mating and can still take.

i have never had a bitch go 62 or 64 days. i did have a litter that went 60 or maby i miscounted. i count from the first tie and 58 has been the lucky number. i have a litter that is due on 28 may. i hope she goes 59 and they would be born on my birthday.

The later you mate her and still just make it, the shorter will the apparent gestation period be. If fertilization happens 5 days after ovulation, it can be just 57 days. The shortest is 57 days, I believe. It can be 48-60 hours after ovulation before an egg can be fertilized and another 48-72 hours before it dies.
