PALM SPRINGS-- A Palm Springs police officer was shot and his K-9 killed Sunday morning, after chasing a wanted parolee whom police ultimately ended up shooting and killing as well, police said.

Palm Springs police say it all started around 1:19 a.m. Sunday in the 2700 block of Verona Road. Police recognized a wanted parolee and tried to arrest him, but he apparently ran off.

Police caught up with the 31-year-old suspect, but he was able to break free and that's when K-9 "Ike" ran after him.

"As the K-9 attempted to apprehend the suspect, he produced a handgun and shot multiple rounds striking both the officer and his K-9," said Officer Rhonda Long of the Palm Springs Police Department.  "The two officers returned fire killing the suspect."

My thoughts and prayers go out to the handler, his family and the Department.  I hope the handler has a speedy recovery.  RIP IKE.

God bless officer Gibson who was also killed because of the lowlife.  I wonder if the K9 was equipped with a vest, the same kind that saved his handler's life:

That chase ended shortly before another pursuit began across town-- on Date Palm Drive near Interstate 10. That second chase eventually led to a crash that killed Cathedral City police Officer Jermaine Gibson, whose patrol car slammed into a palm tree and burst into flames.

Durazo again came onto police radar early Sunday morning, when they recognized the wanted man and tried to arrest him, according to Long.

Police caught up with the 31-year-old suspect, but he was able to break free and that's when K-9 "Ike" ran after him.

"As the K-9 attempted to apprehend the suspect, he produced a handgun and shot multiple rounds striking both the officer and his K-9," said Officer Rhonda Long. "The two officers returned fire killing the suspect."

The officer's bullet proof vest saved his life, but his canine partner wasn't as fortunate.

"Ike" the German Shepard from the Czech Republic, who'd been with PSPD for two years, died at the scene-- the first K-9 to be killed on duty in the department's history, according to Long.

Another officer who was chasing Durazo was also hurt, injuring his hand while struggling with the suspect.

What an adorable puppy he was in the pic above. He was taken WAY too soon.
Thank God his handler survives to continue, although heartbroken now.
