Inexperienced male dog. by zobelhund on 12 April 2011 - 23:15 |
hello, I am new to breeding and I have two inexperienced shepherds. My female is ready currently, Flagging, holding tail, pushing rearend into male. She allows him to mount also. My problem is the male. He licks, smells and shows interest in the female. He will mount her but thats it. He will not make any "mating humps" and his penis doesnt come out. Should I be assisting him and if so how? I did attempt to assist. Holding the female still and trying to direct the male in. Its not working. Thanks everyone!

A couple of things.... what day is she actually on? Some females are "Hoes" and will act like they are ready when they are still early. I learned early on to trust my male. But a progesterone test will tell the tale, if she really is ready. If you don't want to do one then just wait it out and see if he shows more interest as time goes on. How old is he? If he's young then that is a bit unusual. Most young males want it whether they are ready or not. More experienced males will wait until they smell/taste that they are ready. Lastly, I would have some health checks done to make sure there is not something physical going on with him. IE prostate infection, bladder infection, low levels in some of the blood panels, low sperm count... etc. There are also suppliments that you can put him on... Mr. Stud in one and there are many others. Hope that helps some! Debby

djc: My female is on day 13. Yesterday she also showed signs of being ready. Is this too soon? Our male is 1 1/2yrs. It seems as if he is just either too young or inexperienced. He just really doesn't seem to know what to do or really be too interested in trying hard.

No, day 13 would be in the normal ballpark of 9-15. I've had females take as far in as 25 days. So a progesterone and health checks on him are what I would suggest. Debby

1 1/2 year male is still only an adolescent. Did he have an opportunity to see an experienced male mate a female? How old is your female? If she is about the same age – she is only a teenager, too. Nature usually takes care of itself. If you are desperate for them to mate, leave those puppies alone – they’ll figure it out eventually on their own…

Just wondering, since your male is so young, have you had his hips examined? If he is dysplastic, mounting the bitch will be painful, & thrusting may be beyond what he can do. I'd get his hips checked, too, if you haven't already. jackie harris

My female is 2 yrs. They both have had their hips xrayed via OFA. Its not painful for him as he will jump in the yard, run, jump over things.. I had to watch that he wasn't jumping too much as a pup. I just feel he may be inexperienced and what know what exactly to do. I have been keeping them together. I wont keep them together however when I am away. They both are crated in the same room. He doesn't even freak out to get to her.... Thanks everyone

nature is all he needs. she may not be ready.are you counting from the first sigh of color or just saying she has been in that long by her actions. my stud will sniff etc. and he won't even try and mount and waste his enegry until the female is ready.

"They both have had their hips xrayed via OFA" OFA doesn't xray hips veterinarians do. OFA grades hips but only after 24 months of age. If you don't know this then I wonder if you've actually done this or not.

they could of been pre lim OFA, well i can tell you that some males are just not ready till 2 years old, and then i have seen some ready at 18 months. it has alot to do with when he is mature enough, he should be nuts for your female if she is ready, and if she is flagging she is ready. i would just give the boy more time, he is probley not ready yet.

If you really want your female bred, suggest taking her to a a experience stud. You can use the male next time around when he is more mature. |

Sitasmom: Yes, Thank you very much. OFA has graded the xrays. My vet took them and sent them in. However you are wrong with the age. OFA will not certify a dog under the age of 24months but you can get prelim. results. Thanks everyone else for the advice. I suppose I just wasn't giving him enough time. When I got home within a few minutes my male was mounting my female. They tied at 3:30 and apart at 3:38. Thanks again to everyone!!!

Really, you are the owner of a breed worthy female. Go get a top stud. The whole idea of keeping just any male to breed is missing the whole point. The stud is 50% of the genes of your pups.

WELL MY TEN MONTH OLD MALE MUST THINK HE IS SUPERMAN BECAUSE I HAD AN "OOPS" BREEDING WITH HIM AND MY THREE YEAR OLD FEMALE. HE SURELY DIDN'T NEED ANY HELP DOING HIS "THING". HE MOUNTED, THRUSTED, TIED, AND STAYED TIED FOR 24 MINUTES.
