Some thoughts from Rik

Many here have great concerns for the breed. Many wish to do their best impersonation of Max and tell others that only they know how to save the breed.
I have witnessed and been part of the destruction of the breed in one the largest nations and the largest producer of GSD in the world. And guess what, the breed lives on.
Despite what has been done to the breed here in the U.S., breeders here and Europe still produce working GSD.
Despite 1500 GSD running in circles in Germany and 10,000 people cheering them on, other breeders there, in the rest of Europe and here in the U.S. still produce the working GSD.
Despite all the concerns of the "quoter's" of Max, LE and Military still line for GSD produced from Germany, from Holland and even some breeders here in North America, who concern themselves with their own mouse trap and not what others are doing.
So what if one person wants a B/R dog that runs in circles. So what if another wants a "sport" dog.
So far the breed has been able to absorb all these differences, because there will always be those who breed for work. Because there will always be a market for their mouse trap.
So, really, for those here so concerned with what others do. Spend your time building your own mouse trap and widen the path to your door.
Don't waste time concerned because I run a dog in a circle. It will not hinder you at all. Unless of course, all your contributions to the GSD are in your mind and not on your leash.

I hear what you say, but with the show interest we still have to bear in mind that the dog MUST have a brain too. Go back a few years and see the cringing wrecks that were given top honours, and we never want that to return to our new up and coming regional shows, so I for one think its great that we integrate as much as possible, and dont back bite each others chosen path. We need people interested in both sides to keep the diversity, and also in turn then, the versatile clear headed GSD. Mo.

Well said Rik and Mo. Too many people are focused solely on their particular interest in the breed whether it be working, showline or anything else. There is only one German Shepherd and we should all be working together to maintain this breed fit for the purpose that it was intended for as a superior multi task animal.

Hi Mo, in the world I come from, the GSD is still a cringing, pathetic caricature of an animal.
My comments are not directed at the world, but at those here, on an international forum, where these issues could be discussed and opinions formed and new people educated by those with experience.
Instead it is dominated not by people with the experience to educate, but by foolish people whose only experience is what they read in a book or on the internet. Or a picture they see.
I was very surprised as a novice to the SV dog (not the GSD) at what I found in Germany. It was not what I expected in my quest for a "real" GSD.
But these things cannot be discussed here intelligently, among the largest GSD community I have found, because of all these Max impersonators. Who stifle any attempt to discuss the GSD in the real world, to hear opinions and views from every side and every experience. It is all knowledge, good or bad.
