I live on an orchard and found a stray dog and her 9 pups!   The puppies are 4 weeks old this week.  They have a few fleas.  Does anyone know how to get rid of fleas on 4 week old puppies?  I will treat the mother with a top treatment.

Well, I would probably dust the babies with food-grade diatomacious earth. Don't know if I spelled that right. And I don't know about putting drops on the mother....nobody is supposed to touch the site for like 24 hours. Maybe you should give her a flea-bath.

Gosh, you took on a heck of a task. What kind of dog is the mom?

Funny, we live in an area that has 2 diatomacious mining sites within 5 miles of our house.  I have never heard of using it for fleas.  How did you learn about using it for flea control?
I have experience working for a GSD breeder and have helped with his litters for the last 5 years.  Thank goodness for that experience or I would be freaking out.  We are calling the pups 100% pure farm dogs :)  Mom a small black retriever.  She definately had several "donors" as 3 are golden, 3 are black w/white feet, 2 are black & tan, one is black and white and one is all black.  Now, to find GOOD homes for them. Yikes.

Fresh Red Cedar shavings in the bedding.
Whatever you put on the mother you put on the pups too, be careful.

You can dip the mother away from the pups, it will kill the fleas on contact.
Keep the mother away until you bath her to wash away as much of the dip as you can.

P.S.
Your next problem will be worms.

ForFoxyRoxy, The diatomacious earth thing comes from the rawfeeders list on yahoo. Also, people use it to dust their hens for various vermin. Some people even put it in the feed as a natural wormer.  I use it on ANTS, hate those things. For all but the last one, you need food-grade. Not that I know what THAT means. I just obey!

I never worm my dogs. Rawfed dogs don't seem to get those infestations. I hope somebody does a study on that some day, and includes heartworm in it.

Have fun with those farm puppies!

There is an oral med for fleas that is safe in puppies that are at least 4 weeks old. It is "Capstar" and kills adult fleas, so may need to be repeated, or you may need to give one of the other flea control meds (oral or topical) when the puppies are older to kill the larvae stage or reproduction of the flea cycle. Capstar can also be given to the mother.

Don't forget to treat your own dogs or at least watch for fleas on them.

Good luck. Post some pictures of your puppies if you get a chance. Would love to see them!

Use the food grade DE  so the puppies licking and eating it wont get sick.....FOOD GRADE DE....and it is actually beneficial to the puppies..

Treat the mamma dog...I would never put any poison in a 4 week old puppie for anything.....USE  DE and treat the Mamma..with Advantage..plus....Frontline doesnt work any longer....

YR        Put some garlic powder in the bitch dog food....won't hurt the milk....puppies are ready to eat   sloppy     mush   anyway
