Yes another dog food question!!! by Blkdog on 08 April 2010 - 02:34 |
| I am just curious as to what you feed your GSD's if you have 4 or more, everyone tries to get the best dog food for the most reasonable price, I know I do... I would like to find a decent dog food that comes in a 50 lb bag that I could have shipped... Geez am I asking too much! I am over the 34-44 lb bags, I need bigger/better and cost effective... I was feeding Canidae, and honestly not to happy with the results on 2 of my shepherds, so I am back to Purina One (Chicken & Rice) mixed with Pro Plan Chicken Shredder. I know alot of folks on here don't like Purina products, but I have fed it for years and my dogs have always lived long happy healthy lives on it, but I want a meat based food in a 50 lb bag. So...What are you all feeding that have 4 or more dogs?? Thanks in advance for answering... |

| I feed purina and my dogs do well on it. I've also fed pedigree in the past for years, my mother raised chows on it and our dogs lived to be 16-18 years old. have you checked out Diamond naturals chicken/rice food? |

| I thought about checking Diamond out, I do like Purina, I just want a larger bag than 34 lbs. =) All my dogs have always done well with it and in fact are the age of 10 or 12 and people think they are 6 or 7. Of course back in the day all we fed was Purina Dog Chow, now people freak out if you are feeding that! I know Sam's sells the 50 lb bag of Dog Chow, but I don't feed that. I felt like I was paying way too much for Canidae, and it is bad when my vet says hey did you change her diet because she looks better, after I pulled her from the Canidae! I will look into the Diamond brands... Thanks. |

| Mine never did well on the Diamond Naturals, always gobs of loose stools so we too went back to the Purina One. I've tried a bunch of different high end grain free over the years and always wind up back on the One. The only other thing they did well on was the completely raw diet, but when I moved I lost all my good connections. I'm slowly building that back up, but until the time comes when we can go back to raw it's One for us. Those 34lb bags do go quick though. Melissa |

| All Stages, Four Meats Canidaie...my dog thrives on it. Wouldn't trade for anything at this point. |

| Just curious Blk dog, how many cups of purina do you feed/day/dog? and how long does a bag last? |

| I don't think you are going to find the 40-50 lb dog food bags anymore especially in the very good quality food. RC GERMAN SHEPHERD FORMULA, and TASTE OF THE WILD are 2 of my top picks. |

| Feeding here is broken down as such on the Purina One Female 5yrs old 1.5 cups day (Shepherd) Female 5 yrs old 2.5 cups a day(Shepherd) Female 3 yrs old 4 cups day (Shepherd) Female 13 Months old 4 cups day (Malinois) Male 26 months old 5 cups day (Shepherd) Male 20 months old 3 cups day (Malinois) Everyone eats in the evening unless I give raw, which would be in the morning and kibble is cut back by half in the evenings plus one day a week is a fast day. | PS Since Pro Plan changed to the shredded crap I refuse to buy it. We used to feed Pro Plan chicken and rice. New ingredients included soy and glycerin. Sorry, not paying that much for crap. |

| Melissa, --------------------- Female 5yrs old 1.5 cups day (Shepherd) Female 5 yrs old 2.5 cups a day(Shepherd) ------------------- do these get anything else? seems little to me but what do I know. Do they not eat more or do you give them that much only for a reason? |

| That is all they need to maintain ideal body weight and condition. The female that only gets 1.5 cups gains weight at the smell of food and her activity level is high. We do 2X week SAR training and 3 times a week bike riding of 2 miles. She would eat until she barfed and then gobble that back up.. garbage gut can eat anything and still have awesome stools. She is not altered, so it is not due to "lazy dog" syndrome. The one that eats 2.5 cups when younger would eat 4 to maintain and as she has gotten older the ammt needed to maintain weight has gone down slightly. She too gets bike rides, plays ball and goes hiking. This would be ideal, actually if you think about it. My dogs do very poorly on super premium food and awesome on middle of the road food. I believe we have taken sensitive skin, stomaches, etc.. as the norm. I don't want a dog that I have to constantly battle to find a food that agrees with it. My dogs are healthy and go to the vet every 3 years for their rabies shot and have gone for the occasional spider bite but nothing else. IMO if it's not broke, don't fix it. BTW I do feed the supplement Nupro Silver |

| If you can find it, and that's a big IF Pro plan still has the origional chicken and rice formula marked as all life stages in the origional 37.5lb bags. For the life of me, I can't find it but when I do, I will be using it. That is what my dogs were origionally eating until they changed the formula adding soy and glycerin, decreasing the poundage of the bags and raising the price. Gotta love the dog food companies. | blkdog As far as I know they no longer make the good quality dog foods in the 50 pound bags. I sure wish they did!! There are not that many companies that still make the food in 40 pound bags...at Petco where I work, there are only 2 brands that still make 40 pound bags...that is Iams and Eukanuba. Which is owned by the same company (Proctor and Gamble). I also know that the Diamond Naturals still has 40 pound bags (althought it is not sold at Petco). |
