Please Help New Dog Owner! Germen Shepherd or Belgian Malinois? by andrew8404 on 22 December 2009 - 07:28 |
I just got a 4 month old puppy from the animal shelter and they said it was a Germen Shepherd mix. After doing some research she looks a lot like a Belgian Malinois. Maybe a mix of the two? Anyways, I've had her for two weeks and is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met! I'm hoping she'll make a great search and rescue dog! Your input would be great I'm very curious to find out

She does look at least part Malinois. Cute pup.

Definitely looks Mali. With the red tint to the coat and the black mask (although a little light) it looks like a Mali or mostly Mali to me. Not to mention the structure. Animal shelters wouldnt know a Mali if it bit them in the ass. Of course its hard to verify just what is in a dog like that. Dont worry about it and do the best you can with the dog.

Looks more Mali than GSD, but you can do a Breed DNA test. You can get the kit at a number of places online- I think they cost about $50.00. I've heard both good and bad about them, but it might be worth a try. Char

I am going to say a shep/mal cross, the paws are shep in shape, the face is mal in color, shep in shape. Always, Cee Here is may mali as a pup ![]()

She looks like a Mali to me but I've not had that much contact with them. More likely a mix between Mal & GSD. She sure is a cutie, Enjoy her! Deb

Thanks! Yeah, I know Petco has a DNA test but it's expensive around 130. I guess it's not really that important but I'm awfully curious to know what she really is. The online DNA test I haven't heard of before. I'll have to check that out thanks!

Andrew, She looks like a Mal/Shep cross but that doesn't explain the ears. She sure looks like a sweetheart with a high IQ. Michele

Those "DNA" test are complete bullshit!

How big is that puppy? I'm asking because it looks like it has a little Great Dane in it.

Does it really matter?
by andrew8404 on 24 December 2009 - 07:23 |
No, it really doesn't matter I'm just curious and would love to know! It's not going to change anything but I'm a nerd and would love to tell people about what type of dog I have and know it's roots. Right now she's around 4 months and weights 25 pounds so I really don't think she's going to be GSD big but we will see. I appreciate everyones thoughts and inputs!

She is a cutie:) Have fun with her. What type of activity are you going to do with her. These type of dogs love to have a job to do, especially being a therapy dog, and if she has high drive maybe look into Schutz. My Jami pictured above has an off button, but she is also high drive and we are doing Schutzhund. Always, Cee

So far she's been extremely behaved for a puppy. She doesn't go to crazy and mainly loves to snuggle and sleep. She gets along with everyone and pretty much every dog. I've been taking her to the dog park and playing fetch with her a lot so I'm sure that helps tire her out a little bit. I even taught her how to go down the slide at the park today which she loved doing. Ideally, I'm hoping to do Search and Rescue with her so I'm in the process of joining a group in the County I live in. Do you know of any books or good places to do the Shutzhund?
by AineeNR1 on 26 December 2009 - 01:58 |
Search and Rescue groups usually do not want you to train in Schutzhund due to the bite work taught predominantly, thus I would turn to them for answers. when in doubt, test for parentage http://www.vetdnacenter.com/fees.html Test Type Canine Ancestry/Dog Breed Testing Turnaround 3 weeks Test Fee $88 per dog ---------------------------------------------------------------------- also available from this source which I didn't know is: Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) Available for all breeds 10 working days turn around time $58 per sample Volume discount for 5 or more samples: $48 per sample

I've been looking at the DNA sites online but most of them if not all of them that I've seen so far don't include Belgian Malinois as one of it's Breeds it looks for. So there's no real point in doing it since I'm pretty sure she has some Malinois in her.

Yes, I believe she is a mix between Mainois and Great Dane. Have fun with her. |

I really don't see the great dane but what do I know?
