But you’ve got to realize, Steve, that US society is one of the most gun-happy and militaristic on the planet; and sporting a foreign policy based on the fundamental creed that two wrongs, or military might or both, automatically make a right! Take the Iraq fiasco: by the time it is done with it will have cost at least two trillion dollars (and who knows how many innocent lives!), with much of it going into the pockets of Bush family’s business connections. And after all that, Iraq very likely will lapse into a fundamentalist Muslim State regardless, if it doesn’t splinter first, whereas this same money could have fed, housed and educated every badly-off African child twice over! (Many of who are still dying daily of starvation etc.) The only possible rationale for this bit of adventurism resides in the fact that Iraq owns the world’s only remaining, massive and relatively untapped oil reserves – stuff that’s getting pricier by the day though, even should the US end up with its longer-term control! Afghanistan looked like a losing proposition from the word go, even if it does take the Taliban five, ten or all of fifteen years. At the same time, and relevant chat-rooms bear me out, a large portion of the US middle class are thoroughly disillusioned or have lost faith in the American Ideal altogether (with many turning to extreme religious expression); rampant materialism being partly responsible, with democratic freedoms meaning little bar being free to shop and consume! And of course with their political leaders as well, if not and with the way things generally have been heading for decades. Meanwhile, ever more US corporations (including Wal-Mart) export American jobs to low-wage countries, China and India included; the joys of globalization first hand!
