what is Points Dog? in regards to schutzhund, IPO? by skyhorse on 08 March 2012 - 18:02 |
I recently heard the term "points dog" and was curious as to perceptions among WL and SL what this means? It was used as if to say "I don't have a points dog ..." so not so concerned about how good they would do at a trial? What is a points dog, are they made, bred, trained? and why would someone not want one or say they don't have one? are they saying their dog is just a pet or mediocre dog? or they don't have the edge? thanks, D

Most of the time, what people mean by that statement.... Is no where near what the truth is. JMHO. Mary

A point dog is a dog where the different drives are balanced in the most ideal way to score points in competition , so , not handler hard, dominant , sharp or stubborn to name a few nothing wrong with a point dog as long as you know how to level it out in breeding , and thats where the problem is , if you breed points to points you will end up with nothing see why some of the topwinners in various breeds dont get a lot of breedings and dont produce many great dogs at all

All the handlers are concerned with is "points" so there training reflects that. A dog that's not that serious trained to look serious for points in a competition, & vice versa a dog that could be a beast but never went that direction in training because worried about loosing points. They don't care so much about "real" and worry more about the "picture".

When I hear "points dog" I think of a dog that is trained with the highest score in mind. More precision type training. Pretty much the same as when people say they want a competition dog. They are thinking of a dog that can be trained so precision that it does not loose many points in competitions. JMHO Debby
