| Hey guys, puppy is now 10 months old and has grown to "dislike" my neighbors dog and also now my neighbor himself. Here's the thing: The dog is a Chihuahua and jumps and growls and barks every time he sees my dog. My pup has been very good and patient in the past, waiting, it seems, for someone to correct the other dog while he just keeps on being annoying. The owner talks baby talk to the dog saying "Oh, it's o.k. the big doggie won't hurt you." Then they pick the dog up and he keeps barking and growling. Now whenever my pup sees the dog or even just the owner, he stops dead in his tracks, stares at them and as soon as one of them utters a word, he starts barking and growling and jumping up. Get this, my neighbor suggested that I get an e-collar and shock my dog when he does this. Is this person out of their mind? So, punish the big pup and just let the little dog do whatever he wants and reward him for it? Any suggestions? Of course, I don't want my dog to hurt anyone but he just really seems frustrated now because this has gone on for so long and the dog just continues to do this. I just try to avoid them now when I am with my pup but I feel like that isn't the right thing to do. Am I wrong? |

| This brings back some bad memories from my childhood. My childhood best friend had a neighbour with a nasty little chihuhua. We couldn't enjoy being out in her backyard when Ming was out nextdoor, as he would yap at us nonstop, and charge the fence in an aggressive manner. The little **** lived to be nearly 20 years old too. I had moved away by then, but I heard rumours someone had poisoned him. Gee, I wonder why? Tell your neighbour to get an e-collar for HIS dog. I'd be tempted to give my dog a boost over the fence, and see what happened, but that might get you in trouble with the law! **#$%%!!! idiot small dog owners! It's ALWAYS the big dog's fault in their eyes.... |

| I'm no professional, these are just my opinions. You should correct your dogs behavior, but in no way is shock necessary. Just let him know that it is not ok for his actions. My mother had a GSD when I was younger and our neighbor's kid (about an 11 year old), would aggrevate Max everyday, taking a stick and running it up the fence and antagonizing him. After my mother confronted the boy's parents, no action was taken. This persisted for weeks, until one day Max snapped, lept the fence and bit the kid. Max, who had NEVER acted aggressively towards anyone, just protective barking and growling, had just finally had enough. Guess they're like humans in that way. However, your dog, like my Max, isn't entirely in the wrong. You can't expect to keep pushing buttons on a dog and it not react. I would definately have a talk with my neighbor, nothing ugly, just let her know that her dog's actions are affecting your puppy, and ask her nicely to please correct your dog or prevent him from anatagonizing yours. If that doesn't work, you tried nicely right? They make a anti-bark system in the form of a birdhouse, that encourages dogs not to bark. Works for like a 30 ft. radius, don't need a collar or anything. Saw it the other day in a pet magazine, and it specifically states that it will control your dogs barking and your neighbor's as well! Maybe you should look into one and put it up close to that side of the fence to prevent the little one from carrying on. Just make sure to correct your pup's actions. Even though if I were I puppy I'd be acting the same way, if you are not happy with it let him know that it is unacceptable, even if they are asses :) Hope this helps. Once again, I'm no professional so you may feel differently. |

| This is why I strongly dislike most (not all) small dog owners. They baby the dogs and let them get away with "murder" in a sense, but when the big dog does ANYTHING, he's the dog with the issues. |

| Where do these encounters take place? Dogs are territorial is that confrontation. For all you know the owner may be doing things to aggravate your dog. Yeah my guess is the person has issues. Make your dog sit and just wait them out, show no emotion, teach the dog tolerance. If the dog tries to disobey you , yes correct the dog, but make sure the dog understands that correction is due to disobedience and not the other situation. P.S. A birdhouse......:) please no. Training, obedience, control. |

| Funny I JUST went through this yesterday while I was waiting for my girl to get her prelim OFAs done ( More on that as soon as the vet sends me the X-rays). I told the vet because I saw a small Chihuahua in the office that my dog (only 12 months) is still in training and that she was very high drive and had a little bit of a dog aggression problem which we were working on and that I could wait outside. The lady picked up her dog like I was a murderer, well I sit outside practicing some watch with my girl and the lady and her damn dog come out. Fang was doing AWESOME, then her damn dog goes ape Sh%T and Fang returns it in kind, then she tells me I have to control my dog and that she is lucky that her dog is on a leash... I was not even close to her at all and her little dog was comming after us, not to mention Fang resisted til the lady let her dog get about 4 feet from us. |

| I have a neighbor that has a little dog also. Comes on my property all the time barking and growling.It cant get in with my dogs but I used this to my advantage. It was a great distraction tool in obedience. Now my dogs just ignore the little yapper. |

| Bernie.... .....our red neck low life trash have Chihuahua who is loose...and would stand in front of chain link fence facing our back yard and bark for hours and hours all frigging night and during day you can see it sleeping all frigging day on their front porch...so, to make long story short, it was easier to teach my dogs to "leave it" took me about 6 nights of getting up from my bed a couple of times in 2 -3 hours, walking outside, making them come and lay down in their areas/beds, sometimes yelling from bathroom window...but u know what it finally worked...they completely ignore the stupid squeaky rat and he just now runs by maybe barks once/twice to see if they will react and goes down the block and aggravates someone else dog...and sometimes you can hear in the middle of the night someone screaming "sh*t the f** up"...LOL.. but its not my problem anymore...i get my sleep and my dogs are the smart ones.... so moral of the story...tell YOUR dog to leave it and tell him to go to bed... trust me, you will never fix stupid, and u don't want escalated confrontation w/ your neighbor. Once your dog starts ignoring it, the little dog will see that nothing riles your dog up, it will get quieter a lot faster and it's a big accomplishment for your dog... be the bigger man with a better dog! |

| I am with LadyFrost on this one.. people with little dogs.. tend to have "little" dog syndrome and by golly you better not let that 'big bad' dog near my baby!! when we all clearly know that it usually instigated by the smaller dogs when it comes to a confrontation!! Most are not socialized enough or properly by being carried nearly their whole life.. so they know they will be protected by their 'big bad' owners !! haha.. teach yours to 'leave it' and at least you might get some peace in your life.. and dont take their lack of training, personal ! be confident and the better person and show control with your own animals in your own 'space' !! good luck ! |

| yeah it is brutal do u guys get dirty nasty looks from people with little dogs just curious? Some people with small dogs seem to think german shepherds are not the same species and are like small dog predators or something just like some people think they like to eat children rather than dog food lol i have seen it many times while walking or in the pet store. People leave poodles jack russels and other aggressive small dogs loose all the time here i think they must be hoping a coyote or someones shepherd or other large dog will come and eat it, they dont care about their dogs, i feel so sorry for them though because these dogs are tiny they cant exactly defend themselves liek our beastly shepherds i mean a hawk could eat one. |

| My dog is surprisingly good with little dogs. She is a dominant hag with big dogs, but seems to know the little ones are just yappy pests. So, for that I am thankful. |

Start playing loud music, have bikers over to your house, big parties... lol.. let all your friends German Shepherds come over to play... let them bark and howl! | Wow! You guys are funny. My pup does, in fact, leave small dogs alone. They all seem to want to bark at him as we pass, but he just looks at them as if to say, "You're kidding right?" I had started to teach him leave it at a very early age so he is pretty good. This little dog just seems to get under his skin because he doesn't stop and then my dog gets annoyed. I correct him and he will stop but I can feel his frustration. I also was bitten by a dog like this when I was a little girl so I know how they can be. Poor puppy, just wanted to be friends in the beginning but now I think he wants to eat this dog. |

| If I were you I would let the owner of the other dog know his wild lil chiwawa is causing my dog to build up anger and if he thinks its ok for his dog to act retarded then why should I disipline my pup. Eventually lil chiwawa will be eaten if not controled. |
