Your German Shepherd will not melt, die, develop incurable rashes, spontaniously combust or become less of a protection dog.  Use DOG shampoo and scrub vigorously!

This public service announcement provided to you by a person who now has to wash out her van, kennel and outside runs and hose herself off due to a very ripe pooch.

Brynjulf - Hahaha, I am laughing with you, really I am.  I have one dog that "ripens" faster than the others and they all got baths regularly at the Fire Station (indoors, hot and cold running water on the apparatus floor is a wonderful thing).  Now that I live in Florida and don't have access to my fire station, I have to do it outdoors with the hose (I was soooo spoiled).

too funny........
my dogs seem to do well without regular baths.....
at the show the weekend Jyota placed very well and she hasnt had a bath in about 3 months.
no ripening here.....
most of the other dogs shown did get the foo foo treatment....shampoo, conditioner, blowdry..

mindhunt - what do you feed. try adding a bit of enzimes a half hour prior to feeding and see if it helps....it helps with digestion and could reduce that smell.

That's one thing my dogs don't ever see, a bath.

Xena (the one in my avitar) just had a bath a few minutes ago. The last one she had was in July. I love her coat. She does not smell and usually stays very clean. I called this one her "winter bath" as she probably will not get another one until spring unless I go to a trial or show. I am thinking about showing in an Internation show the end of next month.

My male, he has DM, on the other hand STINKS very quickly after a bath. He gets a complete bath every 2-4 weeks. He is in the later stages of DM too. :(   With him I usually just bath his underside once a week, as he breaks out in secondary bacterial infections if I dont. I have a special shampoo I use on him.

Wow this pooch was amazing!  Never smelled anything like it ( keeping in mind I have groomed for 27 years).... It was like giant feet mixed with dead salmon covered with cow poo!  The owner said the vet told him never to wash his dog........Lordy if a dog stinks like death it will not kill them to be bathed.  My whole bathing area has a distinct odor now LOL.  Oh and the offending pooch is still alive he did not melt in the water.  I think his dignity has been crushed though......
