The (mass) market demands a softer dog. It's how they've screwed up Showlines and some working lines.

As always, the pull of money.

Too bad people don't pick a suitable breed dog instead of driving the market to change (mess up) existing breeds.  A lot of this is driven by status/image, popularization in movies, TV, etc.

What's happening to GSD also happened to Siberian Huskies.  Racing lines vs show/"regular" lines.  The former are bred to race/work and the latter bred for looks.  Temperament and energy/exercise differences, although all tend to be hard-headed clowns. Unless using for racing/sport or work, most people don't want to deal with the escapism, hard-headedness, exercise requirements, constant reinforcement/training, etc. so they demand a lower energy, less-hard-headed dog that looks good/like the huskies in various movies..  Unfortunately, a lot of Sibes get dumped, turned into the pound, etc. because even the non-racing lines that are bred for looks are not suitable for couch potato or moderate activity homes because of escapism, hard-headedness, exercise requirements, and constant reinforcement/training.  $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ over ensuring suitable homes [mad]
