I was asked the other day by a friend about if Marv came from a Show line or a working line, and I had no idea how to answer. Can you all help please? http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=2987590-marvin

Looking quickly at his ancestry through pedigrees recorded on PDB, I would say this is one of those largely American-bred dogs that come from a strong imported breed/Show & sports background in Germany. It is sort of confusing because more recent breeding appears to have been mixed with some Working lines stock, but then seems geared more towards the supply of the 'strictly for pets rather than competition' market; confusion compounded by all those US kennels that will use German sounding names !

There is a lot of discussion in earlier threds stored on PDB about the relative merits of mixing S/L and W/L types of GSD; for some breeders & owners its a no-no, for others its about bringing back the 'whole dog'. If you have time to site search and read it, you might get a clearer idea about your own dog's abilities - you know him, we don't.

You could try to get in touch with your dog's breeder and ask what they had in mind when they produced his litter; and if they know how many of his siblings have ended up doing IGP(Schutzhund) qualifications and / or going to SV style dog Shows. I doubt you will find his relatives doing anything in the AKC ring.

Just on the one photo, I think Marv is a lovely-looking chap.

your dog is a mix of S/L & W/L. Huerto Hof seems to have gone their way and what they believe in, rather than just following a company line.

I will add that in the past, they were a great help to me and I found them to be even better people.

As Rik said this is a "Cross" breeding...Between Showline and Working line...There are some advantages and some disadvantages to doing this...It just depends on if you know the bloodlines and are trying to improve on something...
Some "Crosses" produce some very nice looking dogs...but it may not improve the working ability sufficiently...

I’m not a fan of mixing show and workingline. Seems they want a lower drive dog in a workingline body. Makes it easier to sell pups to newbies or ones who don’t want a highdrive high energy GSD.

Would be interesting to know why Carlos did this breeding. Great people that’s for sure.

i'm looking at paternal part of pedigree and can't grasp a logic of such cocktail.
Geico von Huerta Hof through maternal line has quite strong dogs, many of whom comes from 11D line by Ingo von Rudingen who in turn was father and grandfather to many strong producers of both, male and female dogs. and seems like this trend of his legacy was kept up into beginning of new millennia.
comes the breeder von Huerta Hof and decided to take well established and proven lineage and cross it with absolutely opposite, antagonistic lineage.
crossing Ingo's descendants with a west established but still considered working lineages could bear sense but to do cross with show breeding?
it seems like crossing horse and donkey - not a donkey, neither a horse one will have from such.

Could not agree more valk.

The only thing that sticks out to me is if the breeder was trying for black color/concentrate some black alleles, as black is recessive.

Or perhaps there were some specific traits in both bitch and stud that the breeder wanted to concentrate/strengthen in the breeding program. Something(s) that might really only be apparent to someone knowing both dogs well.

In any case, pretty puppy and he looks happy and healthy :-)

GSCat "Or perhaps there were specific traits ... the breeder wanted to concentrate / strengthen"
Quite. Which is why I suggested the OP talk to the breeder; all the rest of us can do is guess, as to "Why this mix ?". Sounds as though the breeder is an approachable & knowledgeable person, which will be a 'plus'.

Rick, since seems you know that breeder - how long that breeder have been involved with dogs from eastern breeding?

as for pup, it's hard to say which genes will turn out to be more dominant, until he fully grow and formed to be adult dog.
gap between DDR dogs and W/S dogs way too wide, including anatomy. in fact it's like two unrelated breeds.
