ShirosOhana

by ShirosOhana on 19 July 2017 - 18:07

Thank you to everyone for the advice! I really appreciate it, I have been looking at rescue dogs as well. I would like to have a younger dog or even a puppy simply because I want to do my own training with them. Not that rescues are not trainable but sometimes they are a little more difficult. I have rescued many dogs before, actually my current GSD is the first purebred I have ever owned. He was my birthday present. But ever since I have owned him I have a new found love for purebreds which is why I am wanting another GSD.

Never feel guilty for passing over a rescue mutt over a purebred dog who was raised in a home where the puppy was given much attention, excellent nutrition, age appropriate socialization and whose parents have been tested and certified to be hip/elbow dysplasia passing and dm clear.
...
Speak several times with the prospective breeder, check for complaints, look at the health clearances (don't just believe), read the guarantee and sign it, make sure you get a copy with both the breeder's and your signature on it. If you don't like the breeder's personality, think twice as you need to get along for at least first few years, and hopefully the whole life our your puppy. You need to feel comfortable in calling to ask questions and get advice.

...
Visit the breeder's more than once, take a close look at the place; how many dogs, are they happy, obedient, confident, and in good health? Are dogs living inside the home or outside, is the home clean, are their kennels clean?
...
Depending on what you want to do with your puppy, IPO, AKC trials like nosework, obedience, tracking, agility or therapy, assistance, it can be best to know if the Sire and Dam have demonstrated and become titled in it.

...
YOU NEED TO PURCHASE WITH YOUR HEAD NOT YOUR HEART. Yes, puppies are super cute, and its very difficult to walk away, but you really need to do a gutcheck.... If anything seems out of sorts, walk away.
