No I'm on board totally, if you want pups with good temperament then breed from dogs with good temperament.

It beautiful, how could this diamond of truth be missed by so many for so long?

by duke1965 on 27 May 2017 - 10:05

maybe because trained behaviour and result of that is valued more by most than actual genetic qualities of dogs

by vk4gsd on 27 May 2017 - 10:05

How can a dog be trained to do work to a standard that impresses working dog people if it has no "actual genetic qualities"

I know top trainers (even a average trainers) are much better these days but seriously you think they are taking g genetically inferior dogs with poor temperaments and putting them on podiums cos they just like a project and prefer to work with shitty temperament dogs of inferior genetic quality.

by Swarnendu on 27 May 2017 - 10:05

So, the dog needs to be untrained also?

by vk4gsd on 27 May 2017 - 10:05

Exactly, here let vk educate y'all.

No animal including a human can be magicked to be better than their genetic potential in any venue.

In fact only a few elite trainers can get any dog to reach its potential.

Even performancing enhancing drugs are constrained by the organisms genetic potential.

VK, your explanation is too simple - people don´t like that...
they prefer to produce world champions out of nerve wracks, THAT`S the real challenge !

If a dog that has decent temperament, but is the exception in a litter of weak tempered littermates, is bred to another dog with decent temperament then simple says decent temperament to decent temperament means you get decent temperament....smh.......why do I bother???

Vk: No animal including a human can be magicked to be better than their genetic potential in any venue.

It's easy, with minimal reflection on experience, to rebut that statement. So, to help people to sort through rhetoric and come to their own conclusion I'll list some examples of why that's not truth.

After a century of sv requiring titles for breeding dogs, why do they still need to be 'proven' breed worthy with titles, if it's genetics and not training.

Why aren't all Triple Crown winners producers of exceptional racers, if it's all genetics and not training.

If it's all genetics and not 'magicked' (assuming vk meant 'trained') Why aren't all Brahman bulls able to be saddle mounts, performing trained behaviors consistantly, in front of thousands of spectators in unnatural environments?

Like these I owned and trained, all chosen at random out of untamed herds  ( so not selected for genetic propensity for training)...

Were these Brahman bulls all trained to their 'potential' (whatever that means)?

If I were a breeder with a decently tempered dog with weak tempered littermates, I wouldn't breed to it. It's the same as a dog with good hips with littermates all with bad hips. Genetically, the dog is predisposed to a fault. It was obviously a fluke, so don't breed it.

If you don't think temperament is genetic, look at humans. Psychopathy, for example, is proven to have about an 80% genetic load. It can be passed on, like anything else.
