If you might be interested in a rescue; Please contact Westside GS Rescue (Los Angeles) area; A/C 213 493-4327 or www.sheprescue.org. They have 100 dogs available; mostly pure bred shepherds and several long coats--males and females... all need forever homes. good luck Nan

It's a crying shame...the CA rescues, along with the CA shelters, are ALWAYS over capacity. Westside does a great job, as do the other GSD rescues out there, but they can't keep up with the flood of dogs needing new homes. :(

Hey don't lump all of Ca in this problem.  S Ca imports dogs from other states and all over the world to our shelters. Can't be to full if we can do that.

Well exactly, it is a shame, however, these 100 dogs need homes in the meantime. Just trying to help these dogs get forever homes; has to be a few people out there that would consider a rescue. Lots of beautiful young dogs these as well as older guys also. Hope this helps them get homes. Great days to everyone. Nan

Per Petfinder: California alone has 4,979 German Shepherds or GS mix in shelters or rescues currently.  Many Eastern/Mid Western GS rescues pull purebred GS from the high kill shelters of southern California in an attempt to save more lives-still far too many do not make it out of the shelters-many very nice dogs.

Put a yuuuge tax on every new puppy born and a yuuuuger tax on its sale until the rescues are cleared out......then I awake from my dream and nothing has changed, carry on.

Get rid of all kill shelters. The business model of kill shelters feeds the pipeline from rescues into no kill shelters or into pet homes. It isn't a CA phenomenon. It is a fact of everyday supply "business" for the non-profits who get called first.

It even happens outside the continental 48 into the USA.

There are regular puppy buses and routes from the south to the north delivering abandoned dogs and puppies to new homes. There is never a gap in supply by the numbers, only the type.

Great, and that's all find and dandy., in the meantime these dogs need help.

by beetree on 21 May 2017 - 01:05

PIctures would help. I am already at my dog limit of two, one as a rescue. Couldn't be happier with the rescue dog I got!

The rescue board/aspect does seem to be sluggish, true. Not surprising with pedigrees as the board focus! And breeding. Legit rescues will insist on spay and neuter.

There goes all that DNA opportunity!

If you go to Westside GSD Rescue they have pic's of all available. Pretty good pic's also. Mind you I tried to call the number listed and got a fax phone, no answer so if you want to reach them go to their website at www.sheprescue.org. I went through all of the pic's listed. Just felt sick afterwards. Just trying to spread the word. Thanks to everyone, Nan
