BLEAAAGGH!!  Angry Smile

The blue dogs - some of them - are rather attractive, but those K9Pines dogs... SMH!  Sick

And crossing ANY dog with a wolf is just asking for temperament problems!

I must say I believe it is arbitrarily snobby, not to mention brutal & heartless, to cull healthy puppies based on coat colour as is the common practice of those enforcing a strict standard.

There are, were, and is so many real problems that could have been the object of breed elimination. We know people breed cripples and win shows with them, but a white or blue pup has its life taken away from it in a bucket of water.

Strange world this purebred dog scene, not any obvious logic to it.

vk4gsd, I agree--there's no reason to cull off-color pups from a litter....just from the gene pool. There's no reason they can't be placed in homes wanting a nice pet or a dog to participate in anything activity one might take part in with a standard color GSD--they just need to be placed on a non-breeding contract and ideally sterilized at an appropriate age to prevent anyone from using them for breeding.

The subject of culling via lethal methods has been discussed here before, and the majority of members share the opinion that it is cruel and unnecessary--anyone who culls that way does so only to protect the breeders ego, and their income stream.

I am stuck on the fact colour should be a fault at all given the inputs that made the breed up.

just so many valid things could be kill worthy beside colour.

Can someone tell me if blues, livers, brindles, whites....are recessives.

Breeding for recessives can bring other issues like the current fad for breeding recessive blue Staffordshire BT's breeds health wider problems.

Stephanitz was creating a new breed. The GSD. He said.... I want this type of structure, I want these type of abilities, I want this type of look and I want only these colors.
He defined what he wanted in a GSD. If he had decided on 6 feet tall, Pink GSD's, then all our GSD's would be 6 feet tall and Pink. :-)

Gotcha, colour was an arbitrary choice based on captain max's personal taste.

For a minute I thought there would be more to it, carry on.

There was a lot of reasoning behind his choices, but all I was saying was that he decided what he wanted when he created the breed.
And the colors he chose were not just based on his personal preference. There are a lot of books that go into his reasons for choosing the abilities, color etc that he did.

Fantom76, your post is the first I've heard of the Brindle shepherds. Too funny. And I notice the breeder hasn't screened for any health problems, right? Hmm.

We should forgive Max for whatever he had done. He didn't have internet...

Brindle is not recessive to anything but dominant black, but liver and blue are recessive. White is a masking gene, but it's also recessive.
