Hey All,

I am attempting a first breeding with my 3.5 year old German Shepherd male. The dam is 5 years old and has whelped several litters previously, she is not my dog. Both dogs have been hip checked with OFA, my male also has been DM checked by OFA and shows both normal genes. The female is on day 11, still showing some bleeding however it is beginning to turn pink. She is still showing no signs of interest in my male, the only interest he has shown is the constant trailing and trying to sniff her. I have had her at my place for 3 days, really no change in any behavior over this time. He has made no attempts to mount her, which is concerning to me since most virgin studs I have seen are trying to mount well before the bitch is ready to stand. I really don't want to miss her viable time due to my studs inexperience, however, I don't want to try and push things before they are ready. Previously I've always just waited for the bitch to allow things to happen, never had to worry about whether or not the stud was going to get the job done.

Anyone have any insight?

Thanks!

Progesterone takes the guessing out.

Agreed, that would be ideal.

I live in a fairly rural area and all the vet offices are closed due to the holidays. I'm going to try and get in first thing tomorrow to get a test done. I am just stumped that he still hasn't even made an attempt...

That's the issue seems it's a holiday or weekend when needed. Really though instead of struggling with them to get it done if she's not ready it'll be worth it. If she's 5, she may be ovulating later than before.

My GUESS would be that she is too early; however, I would separate them, and do progest test and go from there; there is always backing everything up with a final AI in the event you do NOT get a tie... Good luck Nan

PS:  as an afterthought, if  the male has not had at least one semen evaluation I would probably do that right now.  cover all the bases...

Thanks for the reassurance. I'm going to try and get into the vet in the am and just go with she's not ready yet until I know better.

I had the same thing with a virgin stud. Turned out just fine, as soon as the bitch was actually ready. Sometimes it's true that they are over-zealous when inexperienced, but often, the good ones know even before they've been bred. I just imported a virgin male to use for stud and he showed NO interest in my girls who were in heat but early. Within a few days, he was licking where they'd urinated and by the time they were ready, he tied very quickly and efficiently with little fanfare. Very good stud! So, don't panic yet. If she's still bleeding pink, you've got a few days, most likely. Straw-colored fluid is usually prime time.

I would just have the male and female out together a few times a day...the male will be interested in her when she' ready...
I just used a Virgin Male with 2 Virgin Females and had 2 litters...Just patience is the key...

P.S. I personally don't use or believe in the Progesterone test...I believe in what the male tells me...

Well, as of this evening, she is starting to show some flagging and rearing towards him. She has even tried to mount him a couple times. He has continued his normal routine of licking and sniffing but no other advances. He'll tail wag and throw is neck over her back when she's being pushy like he's about to mount, but hasn't actually carried through with it. He end up getting annoyed by her and barks at her to stop. With the signals she's been throwing, I just can't imagine why he hasn't at least attempted a mount, this dog has a steady habit of mounting his sleeping pillow nightly and going to town.

Frustrating when I've seen studs trying to mount bitches who aren't even close to heat yet!  I'm going to be taking the male to work with me in the AM to completely remove him from her for about 4 hours in the morning, hopefully the re-introduciton tomorrow morning will spur something in him.

If anyone is interested, this is my stud (aspiring...), http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=2137003-jerlands-maximus-vi
Certified trailing SAR dog. If I knew anything about training for Schutzhund, he would love to work that as well. Loves the bite sleeve. Unfortunately, the owner (me) is lacking in that training category however he is an outstanding trailing K9.

The bitch is a VA1 Zamp Vom Thermados and VA3 Yukon von der Bastillie grandaughter, hoping for a pick of the litter to bring another pup up in trailing with my wife.
