If folks are not aware of marker training then PLEASE do not consider training your dog in defence.

BM you are right, generally speaking bouviers and rottweilers dont work over prey ant that is big reason why you dont see many in sport today
we see less and less of these type of dogs in sport and that is what is bad because these genes get lost from breeding, while most people breed to podiumdogs, I could name several topdogs that breed a lot and all we see from them is dogs suitable for detection(ballapport) with clean bite on sleeve but no courage, hardness or agression at all

agression is often mentioned as undesirable but all doglike wild animals need agression to survive, when it comes to food, when it comes to breedingprivileges and when it comes to defend when attacked, agression will kick in to survive

Dogs strong in defense can V protection…they have very little chance to V obedience because of their lack of prey drive. In this sense, IPO is testing both drives that the dogs are expected to have. The beauty of a GSD or even a Malinois is that you are able to have a much closer balance or at least both drives SHOULD be present in the dogs. The alternate breeds which are so heavily bred for defense aren’t balanced and lack the prey drive necessary to do the other phases of the sport. Their lack of podium has NOTHING to do with protection phase and everything to do with obedience. Now…if you want to discuss that and the fact that you believe judges should reward slow moving dogs and give them the same scores as the fastest and most powerful dogs on the field, that just again points to the inability to train the podium level obedience.

Those that want to harp about the old days when they were able to go out there and have their dog closely follow them in a heel position, not look up once, take 5 seconds to sit, and take a minute to retrieve a dumbbell…and still get a 95…well those days are over. The sport part of IPO took over and had to have a way to separate the dogs. What most forget to state is that a dog with that type of performance can still pass a trial and earn a title, it just won’t be on the podium. It has very little to do with the C phase though.

For all these sport/podium experts, how many of you were at the AWDF this year? If you were, you would’ve heard the judge time and time again mention dogs that lacked power and consistency in their barking. It’s definitely something that is looked for at the highest levels and you better make sure your dog is barking with aggression or you’ll lose points for that exercise. But I don’t have to tell anyone that, as everyone was at that trial, as I’m sure everyone will be at the WDC in a week as well…

Theres not much on this rock that does not need an ability to tap into aggression, courage hardness to survive or thrive. Its in the design. To deny its usefulness and smoother it is, human nonsense.

Gig, we aren't discussing bear baiting or professional dog fighting.

BW explained it well, podium dogs people are dissing lose points for lacking aggression and defence.

How much simpler can anyone make say it.

Read BW last post.

@ Gigante , and Prager (Hans)
Dare think out of the box and you will be shot down in flames, by those who do not know which end the food goes in, then miraculously comes out, - keep up the good work.

Those who prefer to post pics of there dogs poncing around in wet lands as substitute to working ability - what a sorry excuse.

Any one who thinks IPO tracking and so called protection is THE standard - is a half wit.

Both  those titles are MASSIVELY misleading, and are a minimalistic minimuim, re actual physical basic use fullness.

For sure there are dogs who CAN perform on the field and excel on the street. (Norbo Ben Ju 6 times WUSV, day job Border Patrol, to name but one)

Please feel free to PM me re testing your stock, re ACTUAL usefull ness, I will reciprocate.

Regards
