What is interesting to me that the pattern on GSDs and Kelpies was the same. I wonder how is that possible.

by joanro on 23 April 2016 - 16:04

@ ^^^ that question... Because black and tan coat pattern is a normal dog color found in many many breeds, called tan point factor. The coat can be sable instead of black.

I owned raised and trained (I titled the grandsire) both grandparents, on bottom of gracie ped. Her dam was out of my kennel. The black and tan pattern come from the grandmother's side of the pedigree. All the dog's in gracie's dam's litter had black and tan pattern, with two sable instead of black.

Another of my sable and tan gsd (5month old)

Yep, Kelpies have Border Collie ancestry, Border Collies
can come in black 'n' tan. Often with eyebrows !

OP says she's a Rescue, so no evidence she was ever

Registered as fullblood GSD.

Maybe, ... maybe not ...

Hope the OP gets we are dog nerds and doesn't take this conversation as a negative about her dog???

The op's dog is beautiful. And fortunate to have her own people who love her.

The pattern on kelpies is genetically the same as GSDs. So yes, they can have the same markings. It's all on the "A" Agouti series. The only big difference is the much more prevalent masking gene in GSDs, and wider variety within those patterns.

An imageThank you guys!!! I contacted the lady who rehomed her to us and she sent me a picture she still had of her mother, father and grandmother. Here it is.. Mother and father on top left and grandmother on right. I think maybe having this picture will steer some of you away from kelpie, but I'm not familiar with the breed so I'm not sure. Her parents and grandparents are pretty stunningly beautiful German shepherds ☺️
