Exercise in humans has ben shown to improve memory function in identical twins.  The importance of exercise on the overall health and mental development of any mammal including humans, dogs, horses, or great apes is well documented.  Link above is to a study done with identical twins.

A good dog is a tired dog.  Unfortunately we are having so much rain in my area of Texas that my fenced in 1/2 acre is under a foot of water so no real play; however, Quint will run like the wind through the water and need to be rinsed off before he comes inside.  The joys.......lol

We used to have one boy who I swear was half Hippo - he'd find the deepest
puddle he could, then, rather than splash through it, he'd lie down in it.
