Thank you for that link to Peik - I am familiar with his current owner/breeder which is Schwarz und Rot. I have spoken to them and they seem knowledgable, but I can't find any comments about them on this or any other German Shepherd website, which I think is odd. Doesn't anyone know or have any experience with Schwarz und Rot? Thank you!

Try Kelley Baron- Treue Herz German Shepherds- State College PA-(814-359-8580)

Small selective breeder with some Great dogs and occasional puppies.

Saw her at the NE Regional show this past weekend and I know she has a litter or two planned.

Her studs are VA-Yupp vom Heidknapp & V-Yusuf vom Feuermelder along with some quality females.

Thank you! For the Treue Herz recommendation! It is incredibly hard to find a good breeder who has great dogs AND who is not overbreeding them! I am starting to feel awful for the females who have several litters a year and suffer physically for it, especially if the breeder doesn't plan on keeping them for the long term! I really want to find that person who has amazing WGSL dogs and loves his or hers and treats them well!

I think the reason no comments on Peik's new owners is because there is nothing negative to say.
They do small time breeding. Have a beautiful female due to have pups November 22nd with Peik as the sire. Hubby is an airline pilot, she a mom. They are on a small parcel of land and have a nice home and kennel. Perhaps you don't hear much about them because they want the buyer of their pups to continue on with pup training and certification. That makes them particular in who they sell their dogs to and most people are not willing to go the distance with their dog.
They do one or two breedings a year and their dogs are a bit pricier than most becuse of Peil being VA-maybe that is another reason why you don't hear that much.
Good folks-no bad stories. Not out there to make a killing (Peik's dog food and vitamins cost a fortune). Less razmataz and more heart.
Von Hirschberg has some nice 6 month olds from his last breeding unless you are committed to a young pup, these are worth looking into. Again, no big hoop la la. Both, to my experience are just knowledgable and caring breeders. Good Luck.

Someone we haven't seen on the board in awhile from VA is Chris of Silbersee kennels http://www.vomsilbersee.com/contactus.html. I do not know them personally but always found her postings reasoned and knowledgeable ( probably why not on the board anymore) and her dogs interesting and attractive. even if they are not currently active they have good contacts both in the states and Germany and probably can head you in a good directon,

You might also want to check out Helen Gleason Nocturne Acres http://helengleason.tripod.com/ Been around eons. Very knowledgeable. AKC breed judge competitor in schutzhund, herding , obedience - She handles and trains her own dogs. I just want to know when she sleeps. What Smile

Also Dan Smith of Darby Dan Kennels http://darby-dan.com/about_us.htm Dan has both german hi-lines and american bred and sometimes cross breeds  between the two so be very specific you are looking for German lines.

I would also suggest closer to home find some training clubs and go watch , listen and talk and find out who the local breeders are what they have. Often times small quality breeders do not have websites and certainly not big fancy ones. They may only breed once every other year but its often worth waiting for. probably don't sell with big meaningless contracts either. Also go to breed shows, schutzhund trials, herding trials all of these are held by USCA, GSDCA  AKC WDA . AWDF does working dog trials AHBA does herding trials.

Taking the time now will pay off. As expressed to me by an old timer way back when I was just a babe in the woods - girl you have to understand - it is literally a meat market out there. The vast majority of breeders are in it for the money NOT the breed. I've learned he was right and it's well worth your while to do your homework.

Good luck PS  a trend I've notice among the volume money breeders is increasing use of OFA preliminary determinations since a. they are in a hurry to breed the dog and b. don't want to pay the money to do it twice. Bad idea tho if you do go with one of these ask what age the prelim was done - some do it as young as 4 mos which would be laughable if it wasn't so outrageous. If told a dog is OFAd look it up in their db. http://offa.org I found a couple of less than ethical breeders who claim OFA status based on a prelim - not kosher. OFA means 2 yrs or older and with a number and listed in the db..

I once had a dog that had several lines going back to Silbersee kennel and she was a most wonderful dog for me. Yes, more than three gens back.

Thank you for giving a whole batch of good advice.

One day I will be needing to look for another dog. I know what I want but cannot have it -- another dog just like the one mentioned above or her step daughter. I really dread that day I am forced to do that. But I try to hear about good breeders so that I can maybe be prepared.

I actually own a daughter from Schwarz und Rot GSD's and is a Peik/Palina daughter. She has her BH, CD, CGC, CGCA, CGCU, and TDI (therapy dog), as well as personal protection trained. She will be OFA'd in January (she turns two in January), and will be doing a conformation show in January as well to get her ratings. She is DM negative. The link to her pedigree is http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=2148252-bova-von-schwarz-und-rot Rhonda and I are working together to find a stud, and will be using a stud known for bringing in drive. I am beyond happy with the quality from Rhonda and Ben, and would recommend them. If you have any questions feel free to email me: Katlyn.dence@ymail.com :) I have a spring breeding planned (may). I am located in Coastal Georgia. My facebook is Ein Herz K9, or my personal page Katlyn Dence. This will be my first, and possibly only litter from Bova, so I'd be happy to assist you in any way possible!

An imageAnother two top breeders from Georgia: "von den Oher Tannen" and "von Lotta". Their dogs are tops and prices are fair. Von Hirschberg also a good choice. Jerzy has some nice older pups available now. (See male pup above.)
